Re:What's your favorite cliche theater saying? - 2007/06/13 01:15 I love that and these:

"Thespians do it onstage."
"Techies do it in the dark."

Dirty but hilarious!
My friends and I coin these sayings around school.

Re:What's your favorite cliche theater saying? - 2007/06/13 10:33 I like Techies Do It In The Dark too. I also like Break a Leg, though I like to put variations on it. So when we're ready to do a show, I'll go around saying "Break a leg, break an eye, break a liver, etc." Upcoming role: Wizard- Once Upon a Mattress

Past roles: Bob Cratchit-A Christmas Carol
Harry Trevor/Baptista-Kiss Me, Kate
Mr. Bernstein-Little Shop of Horrors

OK, so not the funniest in the world, but I laughed!

Re:What's your favorite cliche theater saying? - 2007/06/13 11:51 My theatre company and the church we rehearse at recently paired up to do a special service for my director (who is also the chior director at the church),and my friend made up a book of "Walterisms" (sayings that he uses a lot or things he said that were just funny; his name is Walter). They included:
"Act like animals in heat!"- On rehearsing "The Lusty Month of May"
"Fingers, don't fail me now!"- On playing Carol of the Bells
And after, we realized he had forgotten "That was good, but..."

There were also pictures of him in rehearsals and other random places, taken by newspapers, cast members, friends, etc. One picture is everyone's favorite- The Walterbird. It's hard to explain, but he was demonstrating something for someone during Godspell Jr. a couple summers ago. It's hard to describe, but its HILARIOUS. You kinda hafta see it, I'm sorry I can't describe it.

Re:What's your favorite cliche theater saying? - 2007/06/16 13:35 "There's no such thing as small parts, just small actors." is something my director says all the time in a variety of inflections!

I also love "I can't...I have rehearsal" and laugh whenever I hear my director say after an intricately choreographed number: "Everybody...we're going to have to.....(dramatic pause) RE-DO" followed by animated groans from the ensemble.

Re:What's your favorite cliche theater saying? - 2007/06/16 13:39 oh, I forgot! When rehearsing for a TYA version of 101 Dalmations, one of the poodles, who were all wearing poodle skirts, was can-canning through the house in the opening number when her skirt slid right off! The choreographer, who was having a horrible day, shouted "PIPER! THIS IS NOT A BURLESQUE SHOW!" and everyone was laughing. Now whenever we're rehearsing or before she goes on, we all whisper "PIPER! THIS IS NOT A BURLESQUE SHOW!" into her ear.

okay, wacky story, but I love it!

Re:What's your favorite cliche theater saying? - 2007/06/18 23:53 i LOVE all of these!! I go to an all-girls school and I told my guy friend (via aim) that you're not truly a thespian at my school until you play a guy part. I didn't see anything wrong with it, because it's true (drama club= all girls = our community service shows have a lot of girls in baggy t-shirts and baseball caps), but now I can imagine his face...but about 10 or 15 minutes later, I realized he didn't know what 'thespian' meant because he's into football.

techies- we do it in the dark
thespians- we do it on stage. twice on saturdays.

and I LOVE the tape "YOU CAN'T SEE ME" shirt. I want one of those!!
these are all great. =]

Re:What's your favorite cliche theater saying? - 2007/06/18 23:56 lol, that's hilarious.

the "that was good, but..." is very rarely said in our theatre. It's usually "that was completely appaling, the only good thing was that..." The way things go at my school is that we literally look like we're going completely fail up until hell week. then, we look like we are going to fail more than ever. but by dress rehearsal, after our drama teacher has screamed her lungs out and how, when, and why everything went wrong, the show is spectacular.
