Re:Grease vs HSM - 2007/03/28 23:03 I've never really noticed how similar they are....... I don't think it should be compared to Grease. HSM is just an extended preteen TV show on disney channel..... with music. *´¨)

Re:Grease vs HSM - 2007/03/29 03:37 I had never noticed it before, but I think the parallels are striking.

I have never seen HSM on stage, only on video....and I absolutely hated it. I found it cheesy and contrived and almost impossible to sit through. Grease, on the other hand, is a high-quality, well-constructed show supported by a strong score (even if it is a little goofy). By comparing the two, I'd have to say that HSM is a poor imitation of Grease.

Re:Grease vs HSM - 2007/03/29 06:44 on the contrary, from what i know of the play as opposed to the movie, i thought HSM was very Grease. personally, i don't really like Grease. i probably read too much into it and i don't like the whole "change yourself to make someone like you" thing-- though i am sure if i sat down and analyzed other shows, the theme is there, too!! but on top of that, i am not really into the music from the show. that being said, i am not really into HSM and haven't really taken the time to really watch it (the video). again, the music is a cheesey turn-off for me. but maybe the story itself is more honest because it is targeting the pre-teen/teen Disney crowd where Grease is a parody of itself? i can't fairly make that judgment, though. i'm just babbling right now! They call me Jessica (like: They call me lady luck... lol)

Favorite roles:

Eva Peron, Evita; Jack's Mother, Into the Woods; Sonia, Godspell; Anything Goes, Reno Sweeney; Audrey, Little Shop of Horrors; Catherine, Pippin

Re:Grease vs HSM - 2007/03/29 19:06 I also thought about the grease ending of sandy having to dramatically change herself was insane, but I still love the musical!

I never noticed that before that they had more similarities than being at a HS. I still think Grease is of a higher quality, probably because its target audience is older though so it has to be better.
The opposite of Rent is Oklahoma!!! Why didn't I think of that?

Re:Grease vs HSM - 2007/03/29 23:56 i have to agree that as a whole i dont particularly like HSM, but it does have some good songs

i do see some grease parallels in it, and actualy in one of the groups in in on another site we discussed the topic of HSM becomming the grease for the new generation, and as sad as i am to admit it, i think thats what happening

i dont, in any way think that the two shows are at par with eachother bc grease has more of a realistic storyline, whereas hsm, well first off there is no musical that actually happens anywhere in the show, its just auditions, secondly, characters like ryan and sharpay are just too farfetched and i think the story is just kinda weak

ooo and to comment on the moral of grease being "you have to change yourself to get someone to like you" i dont really read into that, bc they both changed themselves to be what the other wanted, but in the end they realized that it didnt matter

Re:Grease vs HSM - 2007/04/07 10:43 I definitely respect Grease, even if I can get sick of it once in a while. But HSM? No. If you watch the movie (I'm not even calling it a show), none of that would happen. Yes I did watch it when it first came out, so I've suffered. For instance, a brother and sister would NEVER get romantic leads with each other. Unless you believe in insest, no. And the call backs.. Our school doesn't have most of the set finished during call backs. We don't even have props when the show is being cast. I think it's so awful. And I do see bits of Grease in there (like the boy meets girl on vacation and then meets her at school), but really Grease is an original production. HSM is a sorry way of creating another "Disney" musical.

(sorry if it's a little harsh...)

I agree COMPLETELY! I think the ending to Grease was extremely fairy tale-esque and actually rather corny, although I love the show.

And to be honest, I've noticed the similarities before. I'm auditioning for HSM in August at a regional theatre company I've worked with before, and I have been searching the script/score of Grease for audition songs/monologues. You know, since the character situations are so similar.

Personally, I dont think HSM has even HALF the greatness (in terms of music and character development) of Grease, but I'm sure that I'll get over its corniness and have a lot of fun.

Plus, I've got my eye on the role of Sharpay... (Gotta love those obnoxious and fun character roles!)

Re:Grease vs HSM - 2007/05/28 10:08 I have ALWAYS considered HSM a total ripoff of Grease....

I mostly don't like to watch it due to the not-very-good singing of the leads. The girls kind of sing through their noses, especially Sharpay. I felt that the girl who played Gabriella was very boring and wasn't much of a good actress. The boys were slightly better, and I only say this because I didn't mind the guy who played Ryan as much. His voice was the least irritating of the leads, which was a shame since he sang the least out of the four of them. Troy, well, I kind of get a blank when I think about him. Nothing about him really struck me, as did the rest of the cast.

The picture I got off a friend xP
