under the weather.... - 2007/03/07 06:46 so, my show opens tomorrow night. we have another late night of tech ahead of us and i can't get rid of "this cold". at the beginning of the week, it made it's way into my throat. i pretty much stopped singing on wednesday, read my lines at half-projected volume, and limited my speaking at work and home. well, i am barely home since we've been in tech!! anyway, it seems my throat has gotten worse. my glands are swollen, it hurts to swallow and cough, and even to breathe. i do still have a lot of congestion which means it could just be cold related, but i always get very nervous-- no matter how well i take care of my voice-- when my throat hurts. i am going to go to a walk-in clinic today to have a doc look to rule out something like strep but in any case, i am not sure if i will be ready for tomorrow. keep my poor aching throat in your thoughts and pray that it's nothing more serious than something an antibiotic can cure. thanks! They call me Jessica (like: They call me lady luck... lol)

Favorite roles:

Eva Peron, Evita; Jack's Mother, Into the Woods; Sonia, Godspell; Anything Goes, Reno Sweeney; Audrey, Little Shop of Horrors; Catherine, Pippin

Re:under the weather.... - 2007/03/07 21:50 I'm hoping that it's minor (the prognosis, because from your description, the symptoms don't seem to be), for sure! Certainly try to rest and get enough sleep, though I know it's difficult with family, job and theatre, and I give my best wishes that everything is all right! Caitlin

Non-Musical:
Pygmalion (Mrs. Pearce)
Three Tales from Japan (Kimi-chan, Fish, Ogre)

Re:under the weather.... - 2007/03/07 23:47 tylenol severe allergy works wonders. even tho your stuf isn't allergy related, the medicine is designed to treat the symtoms of allergies and a lot of the stuff you're having is on the (extensive) list of what it's supposed to help with. i'd taking some of that and see if it helps. if your throat is that bad, go get some throat coat tea. its made by traditional medicinals and it will make you throat feel sooooooo much better. i wouldn't drink more that two cups a day tho and i'd drink them when i'd get up and before bed. drink orange juice! or at least sunny d. get some vitamin c in your system to make this uglyness go away faster!

Re:under the weather.... - 2007/03/08 00:17 thanks, guys.... tonight went pretty well... we open tomorrow... some minor costume snags... my boot covers don't quite fit and when we were in our kickline, mine almost kicked off... oh, well...

on the voice front, i did not sing much tonight. figured might as well save it for the show. it still hurts and it could just be overworked, underrested, and sick. i went to the doctor today and it isn't strep. i almost wish it were, though.... doctor thinks it's just a cold and gave me antibiotics. if he hadn't i would have tried the tylenol b/c you are right-- it works! i love throat coat tea.... i am keeping myself hydrated and eating yummy soup...... must go to bed now that it's late and hopefully this will go away soon.

Re:under the weather.... - 2007/03/17 22:44 Hi Jessica. So, how did the opening go? We'd like an update!

When I was just starting out, it seemed like I used to get sick for every opening. In my first college production (I was The Minstrel in "Once Upon a Mattress") I literally lost my voice and could not sing on opening night. I could sort of croak through my lines, but I couldn't sing at all...so another student stood in the wings and sang my songs while I mouthed the words on stage. (There were no understudies and no time for someone else to learn all the blocking.)

The first time I did summer stock, I was cast as Charlie in Brigadoon, and I was so sick by opening night that I simply could not reach the high G's in the two songs, so the musical director and I had to work out an alternative to them. I can't tell you what a disappointment that was, because the high G's were my "money notes"!

As time went on and I stopped getting so stressed out every time I had to perform, the physical problems seemed to go away. In my case, I think stress and fatigue actually caused my illnesses...or at least made them worse. (I'm not suggesting that's what happened to you...I'm just sharing my story!) However, even when I was performing professionally I had days when I was totally "on" and other days when my voice just wasn't quite there. When I was warming up for the show, I could always tell right away whether I was in good voice or not!

It kind of sucks when your body is your instrument. If a pianist is sick, the piano will still sound just fine. That's why it's so important for us to take care of ourselves, both physically and emotionally.

Re:under the weather.... - 2007/03/19 02:54 hey, henrick! thanks for asking.... actually, i posted about the show
here... ahh-- the joys of ct!!!

i was feeling somewhat better following our closing. still had a tired throat, but the pain had dulled and i thought it was going away. it flared up again today. now it's 2:45 am and i can't sleep b/c it kills to swallow and my glands are swollen. i think maybe i did have strep and i wasn't given the right meds.... i guess i have to get myself back to the doctor....

i am pretty sure this is a virus or a bacteria or something and not something wrong at the level of my vocal cords like nodules. but if i continue to have such a sore throat, something more serious to a singer, actor, anyone who uses their voice on a daily basis, could develop. you are right-- when the voice is our instrument, it's scary and difficult to go on. getting enough rest and taking care of ourselves physically and emotionally is more than important and i think sometimes w/ rehearsals and school and jobs and just every day life our health can be taken for granted. on that note, i am going to try to get myself back to sleep!!!!

Re:under the weather.... - 2007/04/09 14:01 oh my, the same thing happened fo my cast, after a hell of a tech week, almost everyone on the 60 some person cast came down with something, and i decided I wasn't going to get it, so I cut off all junk food intake, drank water like there was no tomorrow, and took 2 vitamins (vitamin c and a multivitamin). and voila, i didn't get sick even though everyone around me was. good luck!
