Help!! My Tail Won't Stay Put!! - 2007/02/20 17:16

I'm in a show called Kitty Kats. (The younger lives of T.S. Elliot's + Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats) I'm Skimbleshanks! My tail won't stay on, we've tried pinning, sewing, even HOT GLUING! It just rips off. Please Help Me!!!

Re:Help!! My Tail Won't Stay Put!! - 2007/02/20 17:30 Wow, I've never heard of that musical...... that's interesting.

Well, in the movie (and on stage) all the actors had a rope tied tight around their waist, and the excess left was hanging down as the tail. So it's not just sewn on the butt, and prone to falling off with all the spins.

(by the way i <3 skimble!)

Re:Help!! My Tail Won't Stay Put!! - 2007/02/20 20:45 I did the same thing with my costume, tying the string and it works like a charm.

Kitty Kats? Care to tell us more about it? It sounds intriguing.
To go into acting is like asking for admission to an insane asylum. Anyone may apply, but only the certifiably insane are admitted.

Re:Help!! My Tail Won't Stay Put!! - 2007/02/23 17:09 First, what is the material your costume is made of? And what is the tail made of? Second, what are you doing so it keeps ripping off?

(FYI, fabric does not like glue, hot or otherwise. Good for a quick fix, but will come undone if put under stress).

So far, tying it around your waist sounds like the best thing to do.

If that's not an option, I would sew it on with upholstry (koban) thread (it's way thicker than normal thread) and use a buttonhole stitch (which is very strong, and has a knot at each stitch). If your wardrobe person doesn't know how to do that, I'll see what I can do about scanning the page in my textbook for you when I get home on Monday.

Re:Help!! My Tail Won't Stay Put!! - 2007/05/08 16:58 Okay, this is going to sound weird - but in a former life I was a costume designer. If you can, make a small slit in the seat of your leotard, and thread the tail through the slit, that way you can tie it around your waist, thereby hiding the rope or elastic or whatever it is you're using to tie it.

You can also reinforce the seat of the leotart with broadcloth in the same or approximate colors, using the aforementioned button hole stitch to reinforce the parted fabric.

break a tailbone!

Re:Help!! My Tail Won't Stay Put!! - 2007/10/07 16:21 I realise I must be late, but when my community theatre did CATS, they had the tail attached to a string which they tied around their waist. It might sound weird, but I thought it was really cute and when people talked about the costumes, they'd always say that the tails were so cute.

Good luck, and tell us how the production goes/was!
