Increasing Range - 2007/02/18 21:29 Right now I sing about a medium-highish tenor and I'm trying to see if I can lower my voice to hit some of the louder chest notes ( think Jekyll and Hyde). What should I do? Upcoming shows: none

Current Shows: none

Recent Shows:
Fame - Actor Ensemble
Ragtime - Immigrant/Fireman/Lifeguard

Re:Increasing Range - 2007/02/18 21:45 How old are you, first of all? (Because if you are under 18, your voice has not yet settled anyway, and much of this may not apply!)

Please read my articles on vocal range, because most of what I have to say is already there. It is important to realize that you cannot change your range, as your range is dictated by the shape of your vocal cords, and that is not something you can change.

However, it is possible to extend your range, but it is a very slow note-by-note process. So if you are a true tenor, it is unrealistic to be trying to reach bass notes.

Start by practicing your scales everyday, working the lower part of your range if that is what you are trying to work on.

But if you are not currently seeing a vocal instructor, I strongly suggest that you do so. Your instructor, being able to see and hear you, will be able to give you guidance and instruction that all of us online simply cannot.

Re:Increasing Range - 2007/02/18 21:48 I just looked at your intro again and I see that you are 15. Your voice is most likely still changing! Please let your voice settle before you try to stretch your range too much, and do seek a private instructor. _____________

Re:Increasing Range - 2007/02/18 22:11 Like Kris said, keep working on your scales and keep going to your voice teacher. But remember, your voice is probably still changing, so you might end up having a lower voice anyway. Keep that in mind. Hey yo!
Let's go to the mo-fro (Melody Freeze),
To get a fro yo (frozen yogurt),
then we'll stop by the scho-sho (Scholorshop),
on our way to WYSO (World Youth Symphony Orchestra)!

Just a little saying from Interlochen, possibly one of the greatest places on the globe!

Re:Increasing Range - 2007/02/19 00:14 the younger the better. I unfortunantly starting classical training late, and it took me a little while longer to get a solid 3 octave range, but just keep working on it!

Re:Increasing Range - 2007/02/19 13:32 Well I am 15, and I do have a private instructor. I did actually mean extending my range, not changing it, sorry. And I'm not trying to hit bass, I know that is too low for me. I'm shooting for medium to high baritone sound. Upcoming shows: none

Re:Increasing Range - 2007/02/19 18:55 If that's the case, I feel that this is something you really should be discussing with your instructor. _____________

Re:Increasing Range - 2007/02/19 20:03 Quick Tip: It's basically an instinct for all of us to close our mouths when we sing low, but opening your mouth and pressing your tongue against your bottom teeth will help. (this helps with high notes too, but we usually forget the low ones) *´¨)
