Re:My Headshot - 2007/05/01 21:32 ^That seems pretty good for an outtake. Better than the one I have. I need to take new ones, my hair was long when I took them and very messy but now it's short and more manageable. I never know what to do with my hair though. So annoying it is...Anyways nice outtake. The opposite of Rent is Oklahoma!!! Why didn't I think of that?

Re:My Headshot - 2007/05/01 23:10 Thanks ... of course, out of like 100 frames, I only had about 5 that were any good!

... and I did want to address the original topic by saying that I think your headshot is really cute, Caitlin. I like the tilt, and it looks professional.

Re:My Headshot - 2007/06/07 18:17 I'd recommend looking on Craig's list (under gigs) for a photographer who is willing to do a TFCD trade. (Time for CD).

You trade your time being a model for him/her & he/she gives you a CD of your photos that you can print whenever you need head shots. You can get "free" photos that way. Just make sure it's a legit photographer and not a perv. (A lot of photographers wanting to start their business also need models).

We found a great photographer that sells the photos to stock companies. We model for some of the photos (pictures like: girl playing guitar, girl on cell phone, girl with parasol, girl doing homework, etc. which he sells on-line since we signed a model release on them) and in return he also takes a bunch of headshots which we use for our own purposes.

We get the CD & can print whatever we want whenever we want (we have a photographer's release) It works for us for now & didn't cost us anything except for when we pay to print the actual photo at Walgreens or somewhere like that.

In Dallas there are tons of TFCD photo ops. It's probably the same other places too, in any large city, I'd think.

This is a great way to get photos done cheaply, but it is important to realize that once these shots are taken and the release has been signed, you have little to no control over how these photos are used (depending on the specifics of the form you signed). And because they are stock photos, you will never receive any reimbursement, regardless of how or for how long they are used. If you are working towards a professional career (and should ever become famous ) those photos will continue to be used, and you will have no legal claim to them.

This doesn't mean it's not a good option to consider, but it is something you need to think carefully about.

There are versions of the model release form that specify photos can only be used for the photographer's portfolio, and not for commercial purposes.

Re:My Headshot - 2007/06/08 15:42 We don't really mind not getting paid for those type of photos. (Girl with cell phone, girl doing homework, etc.) because they are pretty generic and mostly used for web sites & brochures & etc.

I figure by the time I become famous I won't look anything like I do now & few people would make the connection anyway.

In the meantime - it's like the only way we could afford good headshots.

Re:My Headshot - 2007/12/29 23:58 My head shot is my school picture (I am the teacher, but they take our pictures, too). Do you recognize that cheesy painted background? I just scanned it at a really high res, changed it to black and white in the software, stripped my name in via Microsoft Word and printed it out of photographic/computer paper. I typed up my show history/classes and stapled it to the back. It fools a lot of people. Yiou would be surprised at how many people are impressed by it. The moral of the story, anyone with money can throw money at a problem. BUT, if you have a little bit of creativity, you can pull one out of thin air.

Re:My Headshot - 2008/01/02 14:29 I got my headshots done for free. My mom found a photographer on Craigs List who was needing some stock photo models http://www.shutterstock.com/cat.mhtml?gallery_id=78122&id=78122 and he took a lot of stock photos of us (we signed a model release for those photos) and then he did headshots for us for free in trade & gave us a disc with about 200 photos on it with a photographer release so we could print them ourselves anytime for anything we wanted (other than selling them) for theatre use. Re:My Headshot - 2008/04/03 17:36 Hi 21stCenturyEvita:

I know you posted your "headshot woes" 200 years ago, but I am just getting around to reading it now.

Try this. You are probably in high school. Go to the photography teacher and tell him/her about how you need a head shot and see if one of the students would do it for you. They probably have all of the stuff they would need. They could probably even go into the black and white darkroom and print 20 of them off for you. I was surprised to learn that the high school I teach in still has a black and white darkroom that they use to teach students in.

I was a photographer for a long time (over 20 years). The high school that I teach at did Chorus Line last Fall. The Theatre Director (who is also my boss) asked me (told me?) to do head shots of the cast so they could use them for that part of the show where they all hold up their head shots. When I was a photographer, I shot hundreds of miles of film, but that is when Fred Flintstone was still in High School. This time, I used a digital camera, got photographic paper stock from an office supply store, shot all of the kids one by one and printed them on the laser printer. Truthfully, I couldn't tell they weren't done on film. Now, my head shot lives on my computer and when I have to go to auditions, I just print out some more!

Re:My Headshot - 2008/04/04 12:16 Yea, a high school photography class project. Sounds like a good idea!

Until you are auditioning for professional theatre, you don't really need professional photos. Having friends or photo students do your pictures is the best way. It is a good opportunity for them to practice their photography skills. All you have to pay for is the digital or film copies of the session and the reproductions. If you are good at "Photoshop", you can even do your own editing.

With regards to headshots. There is a difference between "model" shots and showbiz headshots. Be clear on the difference. A headshot is just that, a headshot. Dressing up in costumes or different occupation outfits is not needed for your purposes (theatre). Also, have the session done in color. That is all they want in Hollywood. Black & White is not even looked at out here. Wear solid color tops with no designs or words printed on the front. Do not wear black, white, jewelry, or sparkling stuff. It takes away from your face. If you are a girl, keep your make-up basic/natural. But do wear a little, depending on your age. You don't want to wash out.

In Hollywood, they advise you to have your photos taken about once a year or so. So, if your parent(s) are refusing to pay for your photo session, in a way they are right. You change alot while you are still growing, even in High School. It probably is a waste of money, unless you are actually getting paid to be in your shows - in which case you can afford to buy your own photos.

Regarding Craigs List. Be careful. There are some photographers out there who are not legit or nice. Never go to meet them or work with them on a photo session alone. Have a parent or older friend with you at all times.

Re:My Headshot - 2008/04/04 21:17 Jbug, I will agree you don't "need a head shot", but people sit up and treat you differently when you have one. Rather than having to be that person who waits for someone else to get there so you can stand next to them and have the Polaroid picture taken so they could cut it in half, YOU get to hand them your 8 X 10 and wait on the bench.

I do agree with Jbug when she says that Craig's list can be risky, especially if you are a young girl. And to all of the young girls and young women who read these posts, listen to your saintly, grandfatherly friend here, when I say do not ever, EVER go to see a photographer alone, no matter how reputable he (or she) may be. If your parents won't go, that probably says something right there, but go with a friend, preferrably a BIG BOY friend, or two or three or more. If the photographer has a problem with that, say "Toodle - O" and leave. 99.9% of the people you will meet are wonderful, but there is that .1% out there. Hopefully, none of your ever meet them.

Re:My Headshot - 2008/04/07 13:56 Oh, don't get me wrong. I didn't mean don't get a headshot. By all means, get a headshot ! There is a difference between a polaroid and a real 8x10.

I'm just saying that having it professionally taken by a photographer who will charge you a big session fee isn't always the way you have to go. Especially if you are still in Middle or Senior High School, still growing, and just doing community theatre. My suggestion is to find a friend or a photography student and have them do it instead. Unless you are a professional, you don't need anything else other than a basic, up to date, photo of your face smiling and maybe a 2nd shot of you in a more serious, non smiling expression. Get it done in color and make 8x10 copies.

Find someone who will shoot you for free. Keep expenses down - unless you go pro. Then it is a whole different ballgame. Professional children/young people (under 18) usually get their photos taken every 6 months to 1 year. Even more if they are babies. As they grow, their looks keep changing. Professionals have to be really up to date in their look. It can be really expensive. So, I'm saying, save your money and get it done for free while you can.

Here in Hollywood, if you walk in and don't look like your photo, casting folks get really angry. If you dye your hair, or cut it from long to really short, gain or lose alot of weight, get a perm in your hair, you need to get new photos!
