Murder Mysteries - 2007/01/27 01:14 Hola! I was wondering, what is everyone's experience with the improved joy that is a Murder Mystery? Have you seen one? Have you been in one? Discuss.

I just got back from one that the improv and drama club at my school hosted. It was the second I've seen and I had more fun the second time. (For anyone in the D.C. area of Maryland, go see Shear Madness in the city, or check out Do Or Die Productions for other shows.) I adore the entire concept. Improv is a joy of mine and it's so much fun to see it acted out. Plus, being an audience member is a load of fun if you're willing to throw yourself entirely into it. Take notes, over think everything, make the actors work a bit and help them stay in character. Being an audience member can sometimes be as entertaining as acting.

Re:Murder Mysteries - 2007/01/27 01:19 I've done the ones where you buy a kit to host your own murder mystery dinner party... do those count?

My housemates and I hosted one when I was in university - one of our guests cancelled the night before so we had to convince my housemate's teenage brother to fill in... and he ended up being SOOO good at it! It was fun.

Re:Murder Mysteries - 2007/01/27 10:46 my name is Rita "the Rose" Scallopini and i am part of the Mafia Murders.... it takes place in the late 20s early 30s. it's supposed to be in chicago, but we adapt it to where we are. and since i live in "soprano-land" it works.

there is very little script. just key things you should make mention of/do at certain times. so it's mostly improv. the guy who plays my uncle and i do this funny little improv where we speak italian-- we just start rattling off italian foods and cars and clothing lines, etc and we do the hand movements and facial expressions (we are both italian so we do this from experience!). we have a spaghetti dinner and there's italian (period) music all night, but there is also a torch singer in the speakeasy, so she sings 20s torch songs (well, not all of them are-- some of the songs she chose are not exactly the right time period and it drives me a little nuts....) she's also "drunk" the whole night so it's a pretty funny sight. there are gun shots, stab wounds, poisonings, and even a cat fight (i know i am giving too much info.... oops!)

the audience is usually pretty good. my favorite audience so far was the one we did in a retirement community. they were very into the whole thing and they played along w/ all the characters. some audiences are just interested in the open bar.

we have another performance coming up april 13.....
They call me Jessica (like: They call me lady luck... lol)

Favorite roles:

Eva Peron, Evita; Jack's Mother, Into the Woods; Sonia, Godspell; Anything Goes, Reno Sweeney; Audrey, Little Shop of Horrors; Catherine, Pippin
