music man audition - 2006/11/13 21:02at school, i'm auditioning for the lead role in the Music Man as Marian (the librarian). the auditions are this friday ((nov. 17)) and i just found out we need a monolougue. last year we didnt, so this surprised me. but monolougues are much harder for me to do than scripts, and i don't know which one i should do. i was thinking something shakesphere, but i'd rather have something modern. ((i already have an audition song, it is My White Knight from the Music Man)) PLEASE write back ASAP!! it would help me so much!!

Re:music man audition - 2006/11/13 22:41I would not recommend Shakespeare for this audition at all. At the very least it should be from a similar time period as The Music Man.

Re:music man audition - 2006/11/14 01:06i have looked through the monolougues from musicals a while ago for another audition, but that audition was horrible. i thought i'd found the only suitible one for me, so i wasnt sure about the list of monolougues from this website anymore. but now i have the monolougue on this site from The Sound of Music. thanks!*´¨) ¸.•´¸.•*´¨) ¸.•*¨) (¸.•´ (¸.•´ Annie

Re:music man audition - 2006/11/14 02:27The Sound of Music is set in the World War II time period. The Music Man is set in the early 1900's. Also, Maria and Marian are pretty different characters. I would try to find something else.CURRENT ROLE: Liesl/Maria understudy in The Sound of Music Director for Into the Woods Jr.

Re:music man audition - 2006/11/14 23:59thanks. but really, the only problem i have with auditions is odd. It's just i walk in the room, and every sound/voice makes me jump, and when the directors say "okay, go ahead and start.", there's that break of silence when they watch you, and wait for you to start. that really scares me (that weird feeling in your chest) and i cant talk right, and my monologue gets ruined/ or i can't say it. then when i sing, i'm not using my best voice, because i still feel uneasy. what can i do?? AUDITION IN 4 DAYS!*´¨) ¸.•´¸.•*´¨) ¸.•*¨) (¸.•´ (¸.•´ Annie

Re:music man audition - 2006/11/15 00:34I would say that you just need to relax. Pretend that you're at home, and the directors are whoever it is that you practice with. Maybe it would help if whoever you usually practice with acted like a director and said the things a director would say to start an audition. Don't pay attention to the fact that the directors are looking at you, just relax.CURRENT ROLE: Liesl/Maria understudy in The Sound of Music Director for Into the Woods Jr.

Re:music man audition - 2006/11/19 04:36that's awesome that your school is putting on that show. It will be a lot of fun. Your audition was yesterday so I guess anything I could have said would be too late eh? But I actually first became familiar with the music man when I saw the movie with Kristin Chenoweth and Matthew Broderick. It's great I'm sure you guys will have a lot of fun with it. Hope you get the part you wanted

Re:music man audition - 2006/11/19 04:51i already blogged about it, but yesterday's audition was the best audition i've ever had! i didnt go home and cry (don't we all?) this time. but i think i was very prepared, even if i found a monologue 4 days before. i had 4 hours to get ready in a small room (with a piano) at school, but of course i took breaks and hung out with friends. and im SO glad the auditions are over, i have nothing to freak about....until i find out if i have a call back or not!!! but i feel like i did pretty good.*´¨) ¸.•´¸.•*´¨) ¸.•*¨) (¸.•´ (¸.•´ Annie

Re:music man audition - 2006/11/20 02:31oh yeah, and the music man movie with matthew broderick in it isnt really the best version of the music man. i wourld strongly reccommend the film with robert preston and shirly jones. i've heard some songs from the newer music man, and i just think the casting should've been better, the voices don't exactly fit the parts.*´¨) ¸.•´¸.•*´¨) ¸.•*¨) (¸.•´ (¸.•´ Annie

Re:music man audition - 2006/12/04 03:41i think i find out tomorrow what parts everyone gets. PLEASE pray for me to not get the chorus. i will puke if i do, i'm sick of getting the chorus every musical i'm in. i know i probably won't get marian, or zaneeta, but honestly i don't know what i'm getting. but i'm really terrified. i just want ANYTHING but the chorus.*´¨) ¸.•´¸.•*´¨) ¸.•*¨) (¸.•´ (¸.•´ Annie

Re:music man audition - 2006/12/04 05:12I recently finished a run of The Music Man in a chorus role - of all the shows I've done, it's one of the most enjoyable chorus parts. There is lots to do and the music is quite challenging._____________ Kris MTA Admin

Re:music man audition - 2006/12/04 21:00MY SCHOOL IS SO FRUSTRATING!!! (but thanks for the comment! ) they don't have the list because NOW they're doing another set of auditions for people they've chosen to be marian AGAIN. but with different directors and scripts.
i know the chorus can be fun, but for me this year it will probably be miserable. if the music is challenging, i like that, but everyone else in the chorus never wants to sing, and we get the directors REALLY mad. and now i'm SURE that i'll never have enough experience for anything else. i could auditions for stuff outside of school - but i don't have enough experience. the only place i could really possibly go to is a children's theater place, but again, they want kids to be loud, and i can't belt. so really, i'm just stuck.*´¨) ¸.•´¸.•*´¨) ¸.•*¨) (¸.•´ (¸.•´ Annie

Re:music man audition - 2006/12/04 21:21FYI - being loud and belting are two totally different things. If you are having difficulty with projection, it is most likely a breath support issue._____________ Kris MTA Admin

Just because you have never had a leading role at your school doesn't mean you are inexperienced in theater. Try auditioning at a community theater in your area, no experience necessary, that's what community theater is all about, getting people who love to perform together.
Also, many directors have told me that they believe ensemble roles are more challenging the leading roles, since in many shows the ensemble members play more than one part. Imagine convincingly portraying a nun to a princess, back to a nun, then to an rural folk singer & then back to a nun. IMO I'd say that's a lot more difficult than playing the same character for the whole show.
So, I would imagine you have a lot more experience than you think you do!----------Emily----------

Re:music man audition - 2006/12/05 23:05thanks. my voice teacher just gave me a few community theaters to try this summer that are very good. AND my friends told me that i don't just have the chorus....but i also have a part in Pick-A-Little-Talk-A-Little!! but I don't know who i am yet, so i'm not sure if i have a solo. i know it's not a very big role, but it's the first real role i've really had with a name (that i don't know yet )*´¨) ¸.•´¸.•*´¨) ¸.•*¨) (¸.•´ (¸.•´ Annie
