One more jukebox musical down the tubes... - 2006/11/11 06:01 A BOB DYLAN-inspired Broadway musical is set to close less than a month after its premiere after receiving a critical mauling. THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN' will shut after just 28 performances next week (19NOV06), a spokesman for the show's public relations firm revealed yesterday (08NOV06). In a New York Times review, theatre critic BEN BRANTLEY called the Bob Dylan show "the latest heart-rending episode in Broadway's own reality soap opera, 'When bad shows happen to great songwriters."' The musical was conceived and choreographed by TWYLA THARP, who also transformed BILLY JOEL's songs into Tony-award winning musical MOVIN' OUT. _____________

Re:One more jukebox musical down the tubes... - 2006/11/12 03:38 I had heard that this was supposed to do really well but I guess you can never really tell until it actually opens. I never really thought Bob Dylan's songs were that suited for Broadway audiences even though they are amazing and he's a total genius who I love. I really wanted this to do well for his sake but I think people are just sick of jukebox musicals. I know I am. -Georgia

As weird as Mrs. Tharp's choreography is, I have to give her a round of applause for taking chances and being very artistical.

The composition of her dances is just breathtaking.

The only reason I find the closing of Times They Are A-Changin' closing is because it is a friend of mine's first broadway show and he barely had a chance to perform it in front of an audience.

Re:One more jukebox musical down the tubes... - 2006/11/23 05:07 I pretty much hated Movin' Out when I saw it. I found it just as boring as watching an amateur dance recital.

I loved Abba, though. Just loved it. But could you call this a true Jukebox Musical?

Re:One more jukebox musical down the tubes... - 2006/11/23 21:31 I think so. It follows pretty much the same formula of any other jukebox musical even if it is better music than most jukebox shows. They took a bunch of music by one artist, wrote a story that showcased it and then put it on stage. That's what a jukebox musical is. -Georgia
