Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2008/04/30 02:04 How about venues that book totally inappropriate events in the building during your show?

When we did Mikado a few months ago, our venue booked into the building, I kid you not, smack down wrestling. Face masks and loud announcers and the whole schtick. The people at the back of the theatre couldn't hear us over the loud music and shouting from the lobby area. And when asked to keep it down, they were rude to our cast and crew, using rather choice language.

We did get a letter of apology from the venue after the fact, but the damage was done to our company's reputation. Ridiculous, if you ask me.

If only it had been Sumo Wrestling, it would have at least fit in with our show!

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2008/04/30 09:11 Ooh!
-When your costume rips during the first perofrmance (and you have to safety pin and bear it for the rest of your performnces)
-When people who sit behind you at a show cough and hack and wheeze, then leave in the middle of a musical number (asking each person to "Please excuse me" very loudly as they leave AND come back in during the next musical number)
Current Role: Louise Lerman/Eve (Judy's Assistant) in "Ruthless!" by Marvin Laird.
Recently: Lala Levy in "The Last Night of Ballyhoo" by Alfred Uhry.

How old was he??

I think he was seven. Too old to be pulling crap like that in my opinion. He got into a good deal of trouble for it though.

A child that age peeing on someone's costume should have gotten into a good deal of trouble for a stunt like that! I don't care how talented a kid is, if he/she pulls nonsense like that, I would not only never cast him/her again but would think long and hard about booting his butt from the show.

All that goes way beyond stage etiquette. Seems to me a kid who would do something like that has some serious problems.

What did the parents do (if anything?)

-People who go to auditions for older shows with Hairspray or Wicked sheet music tucked under their arms

Those are the two most popular musicals among everyone in my theatre company (it is a youth theatre company) so i naturally stay away from those shows for audition songs, but for Oklahoma! auditions one of my friends was thinking about singing a wicked song!!! I don't know if she actually went through with it, but Oklahoma! and Wicked...

Oh and another thing that annoys me:
-when someone sings a song from the show from LAST season and then FORGETS the words!!!

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2008/04/30 18:00 When an actor comes to the theatre drunk (even just a little) and you have to perform your scene with them. Not only is it disrespectful to the audience who PAID to see the show but it's disrespectful to the other actors who are giving it their all and sober.

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2008/05/01 21:52 I thought of another one. Especially with young actors, sometimes I hear people brag about the number of shows they have been in. It's as if being in 30 shows automaticly makes you soooo much more talented than someone who might have only done one or two productions before. The number of shows you have been in is not a measure of talent! Past Productions: Chicago (Ensemble)
Currently: Into the Woods (Little Red Ridinghood), Petite Rouge (Mama Duck)

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2008/05/02 21:33 When you are in a show with younger children and their parents sit right outside the theatre and are constantly trying to see whats going on. I understand you want to see your child onstage, but this is a CLOSED rehearsal, and that is what the performances are for!

Also, when younger siblings of actors find it perfectly okay to waltz backstage and start messing withprops and sets as if they were a member of the cast. Sticking your head backstage for a couple seconds to tell your sister to break a leg is okay. Spending the entire call backstage with the cast, however, is not.
I'm Micaela. But you can call me Mickey!

Currently: Taking a much needed BREAK!

Dream Roles- Lucy in YGMCB, Penny in Hairspray (She's hysterical!), Anything in Oklahoma.

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2008/05/03 14:15 -people who are into theatre and are in your cast and then don't know anything about theatre!!!

Okay, time for a story! I was in the dressing room talking to a couple of people in the cast and i mentioned that i liked listening to showtunes. Everyone was really quiet and gave me this look: and then one girl asked,"What is showtunes?!" Come on, you have got to be kidding me, i am talking to other "theatre people" and the girl (who got a bigger role than me!) is asking me,"What is a showtune?!" Sorry if this sounds rude, but i was so annoyed!

yes! one little girl from a show we were in repertory with accosted me outside of a tech rehearsal asked me how many shows I'd been in. "five-" I told her, and she quickly cut me off with "this is my twelfth show. And that's only counting the major musicals." I was like ooookay, that's a little bit rude.
