Beauty and the Beast? - 2008/04/30 22:16I found auditions for "Beauty and the Beast" which are coming up next week. Looking at my picture and my resume, do you guys think I could play Chip? I'm 5 feet, 1 inch, 130 pounds, and have red hair and brown eyes. I've played Little Jake in "Annie Get Your Gun" and was called back for Little Red in "Into the Woods" (I was cast as Jack's Mother because I was best for the role, though the director also said I was very good as Little Red). Or any other ideas for roles? Also, any ideas for audition songs? I've got a couple up my sleeve, but I want to know what you guys think. Any suggestions? It's a community production.

To be completely honest with you, everytime I've auditioned for BATB theirs always been a girl short enough and good enough to play Chip but she's never cast as Chip. I don't know why that is really, maybe it doesnt have the same effect? Anywho 5'1 is a little tall to be playing a little kid as well.
Have you thought at all about auditioning for a Silly Girl or one of the featured chorus people? Silly Girls are hilarious it seems like they'd be preferably short but they could pretty much be any size.
Also if you wouldn't mind being in chorus it'd be a great show for you as well, the chorus does quite a bit and they're in great numbers.
I'd suggest something from Annie, or even Sound of Music if you're auditioning for Chip. But for the Silly Girls I think "Cain't Say No" from Oklahoma embodies each of them to the fullest and its hilarious.
My friend used that and she was offered a choice of which Silly Girl she wanted to be by the director Haha.
Break a leg! Let me know how everything turns out Name: Bruce Current Production: None. Upcoming Auditions:

Re:Beauty and the Beast? - 2008/05/01 21:40I was also thinking of Silly Girls somewhere in the back of my head, but it just wouldn't come out. But a question: if I did do "I Caint Say No", should I lose the accent? I'm also only so-so at dance...

Re:Beauty and the Beast? - 2008/05/01 22:58I'm a short girl who'd love to play Chip, but I've only ever seen a boy.
I agree you should try for a Silly Girl. That's really fun and you could possibly do a lot with it.
For "I Cain't Say No", definitely drop the accent. The song is still cute and using an accent at an audition makes me cringe (unless you can do it really good and it is important for the role, and in this case, its not).Name: Devyn

Re:Beauty and the Beast? - 2008/05/02 02:57I agree with bwaybound77 and i would defintely drop the accent, if you sing,"I cain't say no" for a silly girl.
A Silly girl looks like such a fun role or even a chorus member, so i am sure whatever role you get, the production will be LOTS of fun!!! Break a leg at your audition!!! -Laura
Favorite Musical: PHANTOM OF THE OPERA!!!!!!! As for more "happy" musicals i like BATB and Music Man (and lots of others, that i can't think of right now!)
Next production: R&H Cinderella?

Re:Beauty and the Beast? - 2008/05/02 21:46Sorry, another question. This is a community theatre production. Do adults normally play Silly Girls? I think I might be too short compared to others...Courtney Washington

Re:Beauty and the Beast? - 2008/05/02 22:22When I did it with my commnuity theatre, our silly girls were like 16-18. But it depends on the ages of auditioners, I guess.I'm Micaela. But you can call me Mickey!
Currently: Yonah in Children of Eden. Indian in Peter Pan.
Dream Roles- Lucy in YGMCB, Penny in Hairspray (She's hysterical!), Anything in Oklahoma. (I've always wanted to do that show......)

Re:Beauty and the Beast? - 2008/05/03 15:37Okay, I've looked at the guidelines on the site, and I've decided to try out for a silly girl. But back to the first question; I REALLY think I'm short for my age (the guideline says 15-30,. I'm 15, but I look 13). Any tips on looking taller/older? I'm also not the best dancer (I've really only had dance lessons when I was five!) Does the role require advanced dance?Courtney Washington

Re:Beauty and the Beast? - 2008/05/03 23:22As far as looking taller/older, the only thing I can think of is to stand up straight! slouching obviously makes you look shorter, and isn't all that great for you either.
Can you tell I have something against slouching?
As far as Silly Girls and dancing go, I'm pretty sure they always have a featured dance bit in Gaston. (That could have been just when I did it though, not sure!) This could be ridiculously easy or rather hard depending on your choreographer. Other than that, I don't think they dance at all.

Re:Beauty and the Beast? - 2008/05/05 18:16I also found another song that could work, "Stepsister's Lament" from Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. Which one do you guys think would work better?Courtney Washington

Re:Beauty and the Beast? - 2008/05/06 11:59I think "Caint Say No" is much more in your face and if you blow them out of the water I can guarantee they'll say "YES LETS CAST THIS GIRL".
It's just one of those songs.Name: Bruce Current Production: None. Upcoming Auditions:
