INTENSE! - 2008/04/13 21:55 Okay. I am a Freshman acting major at West Virginia University. The way the program here works is the first two years are "probationary." After you declare yourself as a BFA Acting major, you go through your first two years as normal, taking the classes and helping in the department and auditioning for shows. Then, at the end of your sophomore year, you have to audition to STAY in the program.

They list went up last week and they CUT a THIRD of the class. Needless to say, my class is scared to death. Now what we need to do for the audition is a two-person short scene from ANY play (contemporary or classic) and a two minute monologue (also in any style).

These need to be KNOCK OUT performances, so I'm starting research this summer. I would like the pieces to be contrasting, like one or the other comedic and the other dramatic, but I don't have a preference to which is which.

I am desperate for suggestions! Thanks so much!

Re:INTENSE! - 2008/04/16 00:07 I'm not much help with monologues myself, having only had to use one in an audition a few years back or in drama class in which the teacher handed them out, but there are several monologue books available and a lot of plays are available at libraries, or if you know of a show in which you want to use a scene/monologue from you can usually buy them pretty cheaply.

If you are really worried about this and have the extra funds you can look into getting a monologue coach to help you work on them. The coach I know generally wants you to come in with one prepared, but sometimes they'll help you out with finding one too.

Re:INTENSE! - 2008/04/16 08:28 A monologue coach is an option, but I will bet your high school has a Speech Teach. Join in and tell the Speech Coach that you want to do Dramatic Intrepretation. S/he will get you a monologue and will work it with you.

Any problem can be solved if we throw money at it - it is the rich person who figures out how to make them go and keep their money.

Re:INTENSE! - 2008/04/16 22:20 Check out the play "Agnes of God". It has great monologues and scenes. There are only 3 female characters in the play version. Good and heavy.

Check out Lillian Hellman plays.

A good funny guy & gal scene is from the musical "Sweet Charity" - the elevator scene.

Well, that is all I can think of know.
