Monologue for West Side Story- please help! - 2008/04/10 15:51 Hi there. My name is Taylor and I'm 16 years old and auditioning for West Side Story soon. I have my song picked out, but I'm in need of a monologue. I don't know the show very well, which makes the process even more difficult. Please help me! Upcoming: West Side Story
Currently: Little Red (Into the woods) On Golden Pond (Stage Manager)
Favorite Past Play: Helen Keller (The Miracle Worker)
Dream Role: Carmen (Fame)

Re:Monologue for West Side Story- please help! - 2008/04/10 20:00 Which part are you trying out for? There is Maria. She is the soprano lead. Originally played by Carol Lawrence on Broadway. She must be able to sing legit. Anita, who is a alto/belt/mezzo and must dance well. She was originally played by Chita Rivera. There are a number of other smaller female roles, all dancers. This is a Romeo & Juliet story that takes place in NY back in the 50's. It is about 2 gangs, The Jets and The Sharks, and their lives.

If I were you, I'd go rent the movie - you won't be sorry. It is almost exactly like the stage version. This is a big time dance show. Plus the singing by the two romantic leads, Tony and Maria, must be excellent. The songs are almost all famous. This show is one of the biggest classic musicals of all time. It is a MUST for all people who love and want to be in "Musical Theatre".

Once you see the movie, it will give you an idea about what kind of monologue to work up. One idea that comes to mind is to find something from "Romeo & Juliet". Does it have to be a monologue? Maybe, if you want to audition for Maria, work up a scene from "Romeo & Juliet" with a guy who wants to audition for Tony. As a matter of fact, there is a book you can buy that is the script of both WWS & R & J together in one book! Check it out.
