Annie Get Your Gun Aud - 2008/04/04 17:39 i just saw a notice for an audition for AGYG. when the company announced their season, i hadn't really thought about auditioning but after i saw the notice i felt sort of "intrigued". usually i prepare well in advance for an audition-- this will be very last minute. i have a variety of songs in my rep from the different genres of mt, but i'd be interested to hear what you, if you were on the audition panel, would like to hear if i wanted to be considered for Annie. i am a sop but i do tend to be cast as mezzo soprano belter "character" roles. i think Annie Oakley is up my alley.

i had not intended on auditioning for this show b/c i have been preparing for another audition (they audition for 3 summer shows-- this year they are The Producers, BatB, and Smokey Joe's. i was gearing for Belle in BatB, but like i said, i tend to be cast as the character roles though i have the ability to play others. i think my height plays into my casting big time.... lol )

for reference, here's a brief synopsis of my res: i am 4'10, petite, blondish hair, blue eyes, broad vocal range, good w/ accents, fluent in french, can do splits/cartwheels/walkovers/head and handstands, good w/ kids, etc. past roles include Kit Kat Girl Heidi (Cabaret), Narrator (Joseph), Eva (Evita), Sonja (Godspell), Jack's mom (Into the Woods), Aunt Eller (Oklahoma), Reno (Anything Goes), Catherine (Pippin), Domina (Forum), Audrey (Little Shop), Carmen (Bizet's Carmen), Nellie (Jekyll and Hyde)

Re:Annie Get Your Gun Aud - 2008/04/05 04:19 To be honest you sound like a Winnie Tate to me, not an Annie. Yes, mainly because of your height and build but you sound like a competent dancer with acrobatic skills, very useful for Winnie as she is one half of a dancing partnership in a circus. I would gear for her, she is meant to be a mezzo belter also. Sing a mezzo belter type song written between 1940 and 1965, another Irving Berlin nr is always good. Nothing too serious, Winnie is a jolly, fun character who sings uptempo stuff.

Re:Annie Get Your Gun Aud - 2008/04/06 18:39 thanks for the advice! i am still on the fence about going tomorrow but we'll see. there are a couple of other auditions (the BatB one included) for which i have been preparing.

if i do go, what do you think about "It's a Helluva Way to Run a Love Affair" from Plain and Fancy? not irving berlin but do you think it could work?

thanks for your help!

Re:Annie Get Your Gun Aud - 2008/04/07 21:32 oh, jijane-- and whoever else reads this post......

so, i decided to go to the audition tonight. i felt pretty good about my song (It's a Helluva Way to Run a Love Affair). i don't know about all of you, but from what i read on the boards it seems like you all do your homework for auditions and try to pick songs in the style of the show and for the character you want to go for. well, this song is from a show Plain and Fancy. it's an old show (1955) so it's part of the standard genre. the song is a mezzo-belter song with a little jazzy bounce to it. i sang the following 32ish bars (it's in cut so it's sort of equal to 16):

One enchanted evening in my quiet living room,
Candle-lit and heavy with perfume,
Love songs I played him that sent shivers down his spine
and he fell in love with Oscar Hammerstein!
For no good reason I'm hanging around.
There must be some other fish that can be found.
I'm stuck with the one I'm stuck on, c'est la guerre.
My trustworthy loyal helpful friendly square.
It's a helluva way to run a love affair!

it's a good belty acting song. i would advise looking it up and adding it to your rep if it's your range. fun song. HOWEVER, the audition didn't go so well. at least that is what i perceive. i sang the first part fine. but when we got to "For no good reason..." i don't know what the accompanist was playing. so we restarted. she played it wrong again. she said, "my fault let's start again". so we did. but the double restart had to look like my fault. on my way out, someone said to me, "that's why we don't choose songs from obscure musicals that no one does for auditions". ??????????? maybe i should have sung something from wicked.... lol.....

the dance part went well but i was not asked to stay to read. i think there is a second call back but i guess i won't hold my breath. there are auditions i rock that i don't hear anything about. if i feel so bad about this one i am not expecting much. just totally bummed. need to figure out a way to really really wow the panel in two weeks for the BatB audition.... any advice anyone?????

Re:Annie Get Your Gun Aud - 2008/04/08 06:06 Well, I usually advise in the style of auditioning professionally. For school, community, etc things may well be different and more well known material may be suitable or wanted by panels. How to cover your bases next time - prepare 2 songs. One that is well known and the other more obscure and then let the panel choose. That is a lesson I learnt the hard way.

Also - you can never second guess a panel, they are totally unpredictable. Example: I auditioned for West End Wicked one year and sang a certain song that was not totally unknown but not one of the usual favourites. The panel loved it and I was particularly complimented on my song choice by the MD, who is very well known in the UK. A year later I was called for the show again and decided to sing the same song (amongst others I prepared), as it received so many compliments the year before. I did not get a call back and my agent then got feedback saying I was "difficult to place to my sometimes obscure and different song choices" - or along those lines anyway. It just goes to show that you can't make everyone happy and people will often contradict themselves.
