Re:Brigadoon "style"? - 2008/04/03 11:03
Ahhhhhhh. Brigadoon. Love this old classic. The music is mostly legit. The chorus numbers are beautiful and fun. Most people would recognize many of the songs as they have been around for years. You must listen to the show and all your questions will be easily answered.
For women, there are some key roles. The lead, Fiona, is your typical beautiful soprano. I've got an old recording with Shirley Jones and her then husband Jack Cassidy who played Tommy. Then there is Meg who is a cute character belter singer. There is Jean, Fiona's sister who is getting married. She is mostly a dancer, no solos. Jean's boyfriend, however, must be a really good tenor. There are many other characters within the show. This requires a large cast of good singers for the chorus numbers and lots of little solos. There are also roles for non-singers. For this show, I would sing legit - typical old musical material. Except if I were auditioning for Meg, I'd go more character belt. Nothing modern though.
The show takes place in Scotland - (Accents Required). 2 hunters from the U.S. are lost in the Highlands of Scotland when they come upon a village called "Brigadoon". It turns out that the village only comes alive once every 100 years. Tommy, one of the 2 hunters, meets and falls in love with Fiona and has to make the decision weather to stay in Brigadoon or not. Nobody can leave Brigadoon or the village will disappear forever. The movie with Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse is pretty close to the original stage version. Except that in the movie Cyd, as Fiona, dances where in the stage version Fiona doesn't. Also a number of the songs are missing. Basically, everyone loves the show and it is lots of fun for chorus too.
