Gamma Rays - 2006/11/10 00:41Tomorrow I've got an audition for "The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds" at my school and I don't know who to audition for. The characters I'm considering are Ruth, the epileptic teenage daughter, or Beatrice, the bitter and harsh mother. I know I could definitely play Beatrice really well but I'm a sophomore and a bunch of our director's favorite juniors are trying for Beatrice too so I'm not sure he'll even consider me. (Plus if I get it they'll make my life hell). Ruth is a really interesting character and possibly the most difficult for me to play(she has to have a seizure onstage) and I'd love the challenge of playing that kind of character. Should I choose one or juyst go ahead and audition for both? I'm afraid he might think I'm not serious enogh about the characters if I audition for both. What do y'all think?-Georgia

Re:Gamma Rays - 2006/11/10 16:13Take the challenge and try out for Ruth. Sometimes going out of your comfort zone can really pay off in the end!
Also, if this is an option, check off that you would accept any part.

Re:Gamma Rays - 2006/11/10 16:43Much agreed. Take Ruth, why play the mother and accept any role. Break a Leg!To go into acting is like asking for admission to an insane asylum. Anyone may apply, but only the certifiably insane are admitted.

Re:Gamma Rays - 2006/11/10 17:29I personally hate it when directors ask people to "try out" for a certain role. Often as performers we don't have enough information (about the talents of who else is auditioning, what the director is looking for, etc) to make the right decision. The only reason you as a performer should be specifying a role in the audition is if it is the only role you are WILLING to play.
[end rant]
If you are willing to play any role, you should say so, but do tailor your audition to the role that you would best like to play. Good luck!_____________ Kris MTA Admin

Re:Gamma Rays - 2006/11/11 05:45Thanks y'all. The audition was today and I think it went pretty well. Not my best ever but I did well enough for a callback so I can hopefully impress him more then. I ended up trying out for Beatrice and Tillie because we were only allowed to audition for 2 roles. I chose not to do Ruth because we were doing monologues from the script and hers was just awful. I knew that I couldn't do it well so I decided just to play to my strengths. Unfortunately for me, he had all the girls who auditioned for Ruth read a better part which I probably could have done well but I still think what I did was fine. Thanks for all your help!-Georgia

Re:Gamma Rays - 2006/11/16 04:33It's driving me insane!!!! He still hasn't announced the cast yet. It's only been a week but we're all going crazy. He keeps saying he's about to announce it but then he doesn't. It's not like he's got that many choices. He's says he's gonna announce it Friday but I know better than to believe him. I've still got my fingers crossed.-Georgia
