Can someone please explain to me the appeal in Patti Lupone. I've seen numerous videos of her in different shows and roles, including her at-the- Tony-Awards performance of "Buenos Aires" and I just did not see why everyone is so insane about her. I would like to know the opinion of someone who loves her and why they do.
Oh and feel free to post your own "why the heck are they idolized in musical theater" post on here with any person you don't get.

Re:Broadway divas I don't really understand... - 2008/02/21 18:04I've heard a couple recordings of her here and there, but the only thing I've seen her in was the role of Begbick in "The Rise and Fall fo the City of Mahagonny." She has an interesting sound and look, neither of which could be called "pretty," and I suppose that attracts me because I'm never going to be a pretty ingenue.
I'm going to listen to some clips of her right now, so I can flesh out the "interesting" part.
Yeah, honestly, I can't do any better than that, since I'm really not into belters. She does have a great, rich sound in her lower register, though.

Re:Broadway divas I don't really understand... - 2008/02/22 08:43I loved Patti as Eva (from the recording I wasn't born when it was running on Broadway) I don't know why I like her. I think Buenos Aires shows her awesome belting. Look for the '87 revivel of Anything Goes. She plays Reno and I loved her on that CD.

Re:Broadway divas I don't really understand... - 2008/02/23 04:56I haven't heard Patti a lot, but she seems to have quite a lot of energy when she sings!! I really like it, she just seems to like performing. Her voice is really memorable. I just watched a few videos on youtube and am about to go watch more!
She's kinda got an addicting voice...to me anyway! The opposite of Rent is Oklahoma!!! Why didn't I think of that?

I don't understand the new Idina Menzel Hype. Yes, she can sing, but I don't rank her ANYWHERE near Sutton, or of course any of the people mentioned above.
I think that Ashley Brown is incredibly underrated.Auditioning For- Bye Bye Birdie (Hoping for Kim for Ursula)

Re:Broadway divas I don't really understand... - 2008/02/23 16:21One I don't understand is Idina Menzel. Her voice is barely even suited to survive in the world of pop music, much less Broadway! My throat starts to feel sympathy pain whenever I hear her belting; it sounds like she forces it. Not to mention the sound of her voice sounds like a slightly improved version of Britney Spears.

Re:Broadway divas I don't really understand... - 2008/02/23 19:11Poor Idina Menzel her voice will be gone by the time she turns 45. Its sad really because before all her bad technique singing she was very very good. Honestly when I found out about her going on to do Elphaba in London I was surprised considering her voice barely held up during the broadway run. However, she is a fabulous actress quite great in the Lippa's Wild Party.
Speaking of underrated, I think most of those who go on as standbys and understudies on broadway seem to be really underrated. In this case speaking particularly of previous casts of Wicked. With the exception of 3 or 4 performers most of the standby's/understudies have been better than the principal Elphaba's or Glinda's. Re:Broadway divas I don't really understand... - 2008/02/23 20:06haha bruce I agree. Ethel Merman's voice is so grating, but she's such a powerhouse you can't help but love her. And I also agree with the Idina Menzel opinion, I just don't see why everyone my age thinks she is the shiz (haha no pun intended I swear) ok, and don't stone me, but I think the reason might be that newbies to the world of theater think they are knowledgeable when they say that they love Idina Menzel...like they know a name famous in musical theater, so they are experts. Ok, this definitely does NOT count for everyone who likes her, just the ones who eat sleep and breathe her, if you know what I mean. I enjoy her singing but after a while it's just like, come on! There are many who are better, she's not the best.
really, though, please don't kill me idina-lovers...I mean no harm. Re:Broadway divas I don't really understand... - 2008/02/23 21:41I think I have figured out why I like her so much. The first musical I heard her in was Wicked which i loved, then RENT. I also have her new CD and really like it.
