Audition for Wizard of Oz? - 2008/02/18 11:50Hi, I'm thinking of possibly auditioning for the show the Wizard of Oz in like a couple weeks. I don't have a clue what song to audition with! This is only like my second time auditioning for a musical so I don't really have a bunch of songs that I always use to choose from. I guess I'm pretty much an alto. I'm 13. Um, don't really know what part I want, of course Dorothy might be cool but I'm not sure I'd get that part! So, if anyone has any suggestions, please go for it!
--I started thinking it would be cool to be Glinda the Good Witch. Not such a huge part and I don't know, it might be fun! --Last audition I sang "Take Me There" by Pocket Full of Rocks. --I guess I won't sing a song from the show, I think they might have said not to. They want each audition to be like one minute or less and upbeat.

Re:Audition for Wizard of Oz? - 2008/02/18 14:05Hey, I'm actually Dorothy right now. Good thing you are an alto because the music is very low, I'm a soprano ahaha. Our school had us audition with Over the Rainbow so I suppose you could do that, or whatever you do, make sure it shows off your low range because that will show them that you can indeed make the low register sound beautiful. Good Luck!
P.S. I really didn't think I was going to be Dorothy either, but don't lose hope. You're 13, that's the perfect Dorothy age, I'm 15.Catherine currently: Babette/silly girl #1 BATB next: audition for Chicago!

Re:Audition for Wizard of Oz? - 2008/02/18 15:13Did they say anything about what you should prepare? Something from the show? 16 bars? etc. Unless they ask you to sing from the show I wouldn't sing Over the Rainbow as they will be hearing it quite a bit, and if they want you to sing it they will ask.
What did you sing at your last audition?Anissa

Re:Audition for Wizard of Oz? - 2008/02/19 09:03I definitely wouldn't do "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" unless they call for it at the audition. I would probably look at doing another Judy Garlandesque song like "Someone to Watch Over Me", "As Long as He Needs Me", etc. There are some many possiblities. I would just find a song like that which you really connect to and stick with it. Break a leg!

Usually, you want to sing something not in the same musical but in the same spirit of the musical. You're a bit young for Dorothy, but might be able to swing it. I definitely think you're too young for Glinda. She is the age Auntie Em would be. At least 30, maybe older.
I'm about to audition for the same musical here in a few weeks for Glinda and we have to do our song a cappella. Too bad I already bought audition sheet music! A whole book! Oh well.If I'm not singing, reading, or writing, shoot me.

Re:Audition for Wizard of Oz? - 2008/02/25 13:04Listen to old Judy Garland music. Especially the recordings she did when she was a teenager at MGM studios. They probably have some recordings at your local library. There are also many Judy Garland movie musicals. Concentrate on the the ballads. She was mostly into swing style music of the 40's in her younger days. There is a song she did that the movie studios changed the lyrics to a little. She sang it to a photograph of Clark Gable (he was in Gone With The Wind). Anyway the song is called "You Made Me Love You". It would be perfect! If you can find a DVD of a movie called "That's Entertainment" that came out in the 70's, you can watch her sing the song. "That's Entertainment" was a documentary of old MGM musicals. You'll probably really enjoy the rest of the movie also. You don't have to sing the song to a movie star like Judy did. The song can be done just straight. The song might also be in a music book under the title "That's Entertainment". It was a collection of music from that movie. Break A Leg at your audition!

Re:Audition for Wizard of Oz? - 2008/03/02 11:54If you get cast as Glinda, you will also get cast as Aunt Em. IF they do it right, the same person who gets cast as Miss Gulch should get cast as the wicked witch. For that matter, the same actor should play the Oz guard should be Uncle Henry. I have only seen that movie 9,000 times and I never made that connection until I did that show last summer.
If you auditions are anything like mine, there will be 14 girls there auditioning for Dorothy. Take your A game and be ready to dazzle them, or you will be cast as dancing bug.
Break a Leg!
