Audition for a dream role. - 2008/02/18 02:14A theater around here is putting on a return engagement production of Honk. & I've already scheduled my audition for the role of "Ugly" when I found out it was open. As you could've probably seen by the topic of my post, this is one of my dream roles.
I'd love to know if you've done the show before or auditioned for it before, what should I expect at callbacks?
Also any character development suggestions?
Right now I've decided to sing "All Alone In The Universe" from Seussical as my first song any suggestions for a good contrasting song to that?Name: Bruce Current Production: None. Upcoming Auditions:
The Butler Did It Singing (Chandler)

I'm really not familiar with the show. I'm fairly ignorant about the newer musicals.
I've played my dream role, though. And it was a bit of a letdown. It was Man of la Mancha, and my Don Quixote couldn't act his way out of a paper bag. I hope you have better luck.Briana

Re:Audition for a dream role. - 2008/02/18 23:39I've been in the show before, as Ida. I'm not quite sure what info you're looking for. I'm afraid I can't help with songs, being a girl I'm not too familiar with male songs.
I guess, I would just say about the role of Ugly... although he is most often portrayed as a 'nerdy' character, it is not really Ugly who has a problem... it is everyone else (except Ida of course! ) Ugly is kind and trusting and sincere and eager to please.. it's Drake, the ducklings, the Cat, the barnyard animals, etc. who have a problem within themselves that makes them not like him. In the beginning he is blissfully ignorant of being 'different', but sadly learns that there is something about him that others don't like. Really, his song "Different" sums up the whole character. I think he is the kind of character that wears his emotions on his sleeve. If he's happy and having fun it's very obvious, if he is sad it is obvious.
I did this show in 2003, and can't really remember auditions, but since this is a show about.. well.. barnyard animals, don't be afraid to be "out there" with character interpretations, trying new things, stretching yourself, etc.

Re:Audition for a dream role. - 2008/02/21 23:05I've done this show also, as the Cat. It was a blast, but I don't think I can say anymore than what BrgantineMagnolia already said about Ugly's character. She did a great job explaining him! Good luck and break a leg!Current Show: Spitfire Grill Last Show: Laramie Project Next Show: Peter Pan
You sort of start thinking anything's possible if you've got enough nerve.

Re:Audition for a dream role. - 2008/02/21 23:15I LOVE HONK! Personally, I think your song is great for Ugly, having similar personal struggle in the musical and I believe in same range? It reminds me of "Different" which is a big number for Ugly. I myself have not been in the production, but friends who have say that's typically the song that's used at callbacks for Ugly. Guys are usually after him or the Cat, which is a really fun comdeic role, too. Just a tip though, don't make Ugly seem too pitiful, because he's not! He's just a sweet fun character looking for love, and is unsure at first how to get it.
