The Little Mermaid! - 2008/02/02 14:44 A while ago, I posted a topic asking if anyone had seen TLM, and if it was worth seeing, because most of the reviews were bad. I got to NYC last tuesday to start my college auditions, and decided to take a chance and see the show anyway. IT WAS FANTASTIC!!!!

The costumes that everyone was complaining about (the extra tails, the wheels, the weird fish, etc) I think worked well in the spirit of the show. The singing was absolutely fabulous, and the boy who played Flounder was so adorable! Flotsam and Jetsam (the eels) were always awesome to see. They had green lightbulbs on their arms, so that whenever they got excited, they lit up! Under the Sea, Kiss the Girl, and Poor Unfortunate Souls were some of the best musical numbers I've ever seen.

I purchased my tickets the night before the show, and was lucky enough to sit in the sixth row from the stage. I bought a bunch of stuff from the little store outside the theatre, including the not-yet-in-stores original cast soundtrack! After the show was over I went and stood outside near the cast door and got everyone's autographs. Then, the actor who plays Jetsam (Derrick Baskin) was grabbing a few people to take backstage and was like "Sorry, I can only take three people! But come back on any other night and I'll grab you!" Then he started asking people where they were from and I said, "Alaska!" and then he said, "Wow! Come on back!" SO....I got a backstage tour!!!! AND THEN. After that, I got to walk about a block and a half with Derrick down the street until I made the turn to go into my hotel. He told me he was going to be at the Unified auditions on Sunday, and I will be there!

SO yeah....I've decided that either the people who didn't like TLM were super critical, or saw a completely different show. To each his own I guess, but I really loved it! Twas definitely a dream night come true.

Re:The Little Mermaid! - 2008/02/02 20:36 Yeah! I paid one hundred and eleven dollars for my ticket, and I think it was worth it! I'm hopefully going to go see Mary Poppins tomorrow after the rest of my auditions. Micah---

Re:The Little Mermaid! - 2008/02/02 22:57 Wow, your so lucky!
I'll be going to new york in may to finish competing in national competition and do a college visit. SO I'm definately going to see it and I CAN'T WAIT.

I'm glad you liked it, and got to go backstage and everything!
Maybe I'll get a backstage tour too?

Re:The Little Mermaid! - 2008/02/03 16:33 Cool! What college are you going to visit? Yeah...I was real lucky with the tour thing. If you stand outside the doors where the cast comes out, you might just get lucky! Micah---

Re:The Little Mermaid! - 2008/02/04 16:21 Yeah they are! I met Ashley Brown (Mary Poppins) after the show yesterday. It was her birthday, and instead of being all..."I want to leaaaaave" she signed all of our showbills and took pictures and everything. And then we sang happy birthday to her. Micah---

Re:The Little Mermaid! - 2008/02/04 18:35 I love Norm Lewis. When he was in town for the TLM previews, he not only came to our show and sat down for an interview regarding his thoughts for a documentary about our company (www.theresstillhopefordreams.com), but he also requested our presence on his closing night before they headed back for Broadway.

Yeah. He rocks. And "You Should Be Loved" is the best song in Side Show.

Re:The Little Mermaid! - 2008/03/13 00:02 Do you know about the TKTS Booth? You have to pay cash, but you can get into shows for up to 1/2 off !! Not all shows are up for sale there, but 95% usually are. The booth is between Broadway and 7th and 46th is a cross street next to the George M. Cohan statue. When I was last there, they were remodeling the area and they moved the location to a very close location temporarily. The rules are that you go the day you want to see a show and see what shows are up on the board. You stand in line and they start selling tickets a few hours before the show all the way up till showtime. It's 1st come 1st serve. If they sell out the show you want to see before you make it up to the window - it's good to have a 2nd choice. Don't let the long lines scare you away! There is usually plenty of shows and tickets to choose from - and SOOOOOOO much cheaper. You should only have to pay full price for a Broadway Show if it is a huge hit and it's sold out way in advance. Once a show has been playing for awhile, it is almost always up there. Even during holidays! I've gotten really good seats. Sometimes a show isn't up one day, but it is up the next! You never know. "Mary Poppins" has been playing awhile and I'd lay money on the line it is probably on the board most every show. I once went to NYC and saw 9 shows in 1 week. All but 2 of them I bought from TKTS. It's the best deal in town!!!!!!
