My director is frustrating me. (Vent) - 2008/02/01 15:15 Ok, so I just want to say that I am incredibly frustrated with my director right now. Heres the thing, I was just informed that I needed to be at a school function, (a choir competition) over a month from now. I sent an email to my director, asking him for the day of the competition off. I told him that I would be willing to sacrifice my grade if he would not let me have it off.

He let me have it off (yay!) But now he is trying to guilt me, and basically tell me that I'm not dedicated to the show (this is my ONLY conflict in the 3 months of rehearsal).

But this is what frustrates me. I've given up SO MUCH for this show.
-I didn't audition for 2 shows that I was promised roles in
-I can't audition for the Muny (A Huge regional theatre) this year
-I probably won't be a thespian this year because I do not have time to work tech, due to this show.
-My grandma bought me tickets to see the national tour of Jesus Christ Superstar this weekend as a christmas present but I can't go due to your the rehearsal schedule.
-I'm spending EASTER at rehearsal.

Now, I know, I auditioned for the show and I should be willing to give things up, but its ONE REHEARSAL.

Am I over reacting? Thoughts?

Re:My director is frustrating me. (Vent) - 2008/02/01 15:35 First of all, a director getting that upset over one conflict SCREAMS uptight, and not rational.

& I completely understand why you would be upset with the director.
I mean honestly one conflict? Thats just plain ridiculous. Conflicts happen, and one is not going to throw show into a ball of flames and woe.

Even one of the most ridiculous unprofessional directors I know (which happened to be during BATB Go figure) doesn't go to that extreme.
Your only allowed to have 4 conflicts and your out of the show, doesnt matter if your the lead or not.

However situations like this will happen to everyone, now is probably just your time haha. By situations I mean having to give up one in this sitution two shows to do another and still not feeling appreciated by the director of the show you gave up everything for. It sucks bad, but it happens, ALOT.

* Your not overreacting at all honey.
This situation sucks and shouldn't be this way.

I definately suggest if the director gives you that much more grief and carries on forever, I would put him on the "Directors I wouldn't like to work with again" list.
Director from the production of Beauty and the Beast that I was in is #1 on that list.

BUT on the other hand maybe it'll all blow over eventually you know?
You'll just have to go and do what you've been doing and work as hard as you've been and you'll put on a great show, and the director will see that, hopefully.

I hope I helped Bekki!

P.S: Make sure you post production photos, cuz I wanna see!

Re:My director is frustrating me. (Vent) - 2008/02/01 15:43 Absolutely not, you are soooo not overeacting. it is ONE rehearsal and at least you were responsible and contacted the director to ask him. Plus you already gave up sooooo much and besides missing one rehearsal doesn't mean you "aren't dedicated to the show". -Laura

Re:My director is frustrating me. (Vent) - 2008/02/01 15:56 Thanks guys!

Ok, so I just found out that he kicked 2 people out (both ensemble members) because they wanted the Muny Audition day off, and both of those people thought that the Muny was more important.

This ticks me off, only because our Mrs. Potts (Who just happens to be his voice student) misses rehearsal almost every other weekend because she is auditioning for colleges.

But I absolutely ADORE this director. He's an amazing director! Just really strict I guess... I mean, this is my second show with him, but he WAS NOT like this at all last show.

Re:My director is frustrating me. (Vent) - 2008/02/01 17:06 You have nothing to apoligize for. He sounds like a lot of other over-worked and slightly incompetent teachers I have worked with. If he is like most of those aforementioned teachers, he knows that he screwed up and we know he knows it, but we can't confront it with him.

Bite the bullet and "screw on a happy face" (my favorite expression meaning "pretend you are happy when you are not"). He will ultimiately respect you more for your professional demeanor.

Re:My director is frustrating me. (Vent) - 2008/02/01 18:23 He sounds like he is strict and plays favorites a little, but if he is an amazing director, i am sure the show will all come together and be wonderful in the end. He may just also be a perfectionist so he gets stressed and can come across very strict and uptight. Hope everything works out! -Laura

Re:My director is frustrating me. (Vent) - 2008/02/01 21:28 The entire cast just got an e-mail basically saying that the number of people coming up with unexcused absences is insane, apparently they are getting a number of emails a day with people asking for days off, and while mine was legitiment many people are asking off for many days at a time, for basically no reason.

It makes a lot more sense now why the email that I thought was specifically targeted at me was sent.

Re:My director is frustrating me. (Vent) - 2008/02/02 20:29 Oh. That's better then. At least it wasn't specifically at you. I hope the show goes well and your director doesn''t get any more upset! Break a leg. Current Show: Spitfire Grill
Last Show: Laramie Project
Next Show: Peter Pan

You sort of start thinking anything's possible if you've got enough nerve.
