No cut CALLBACK - 2008/01/22 18:33 I have an audition coming up in a month for a part I REALLY REALLY REALLY want but have little chance of getting. So does anyone have any general advice on how to prepare. We get the scripts a few days in advance to prepare. HELP?!?!?!?!?

Re:Little Help Here? - 2008/01/22 18:47 Well, first off if you get the scripts before the audition.
PREPARE PREPARE PREPARE

Mind if I ask what show it is too?
Then i may be able to help some more.

Re:Little Help Here? - 2008/01/22 21:35 I was on an audition Sunday (for a part I DIDN'T want) and was the only guy who was there - therefore, I read for all of the 13 women who were. One woman in particular stood out because she got the script several days in advance and memorized the scene. When I remarked about how that impressed me, she said "when you are a woman, the competition is a lot stiffer". She tried to level the playing field by memorizing the part. Granted, she was a good actress, as well, but it could be that little difference that will stand out to the director.

Good luck!

Re:Little Help Here? - 2008/01/22 21:41 The show is The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. I want to be the White Witch. I am reading the first Narnia book (Magician's Nephew) which is the background of the witch to get a better idea of her character.

Re:Little Help Here? - 2008/01/23 13:52 I've heard some people say not to try to do a scene from memory if it's not required because you will be held to a higher standard than the others. I'm not saying don't memorize, just keep the script in your hand and glance down from time to time even if you don't really need it. That's what I usually do when I have time to learn the scenes in advance, and it has yet to fail me in an audition. Auditions are intense enough as it is so I usually don't throw in any unnecessary elements.

Break a leg in your audition!

If your researching like you need to then you'll be fine, like Annie said even if you don't need it glance from time to time you'll really set yourself apart.

Re:Little Help Here? - 2008/01/24 13:54 Great suggestions, all!

All you really can do is be as prepared as you can & if you are doing all the research you can, that's better than a lot of people will do. I've been to auditions where people didn't know the first thing about the show they were auditioning for. Unless it's an unknown show, there's really no excuse for that. Doing your homework will pay off!

Break a leg!

Re:Little Help Here? - 2008/01/29 14:28 RELAX... first and foremost.. Relax.. an uptight audition is noticeable.

In all honesty there is nothing you can do to prepare other than be familiar with the material, the songs if needed.
Have your song down!
flubbed lyrics is a killer... starting over.. forget it.
This isn't American Idol or anything but as a director if you don't have your audition song down, or get nervous and forget the lyrics, what is going to happen to you during a performance?

There are some people that basically well.. suck at auditions for a lack of a better word.. I am one of them.. I HATE cold readings!
So if I can get my hands on the script.. I don't memorize but I do learn the style and feel of the show to at least be familiar with the WHOLE script, because who knows what scene the director will have you read?!!!!!

I change my mind all the time as a director, because someone did something I liked in one reading, and I will then want to have them read a different scene to see if it was a fluke or if they have "IT" to get the part.

Whatever you do, don't go in a white ballgown. LOL

Re:Little Help Here? - 2008/01/30 10:51 Be comfortable not only with the part you want, but the other's as well. If you get fimilar with the characters that the White Witch interacts with, then you'll get an even deeper connection with her.

About the white ballgown, here's a story. While auditioning for Big River a few years ago, my close friend got called back for Huck Finn. I went to the call back with him and believe it or not, one of the other guys who got called back wore jean overalls, no shirt and a straw hat. He claimed that his mom made him, but it was totally inappropriate. I know you weren't doing that, just thought that I'd reinforce the fact that directors don't want to see gimmicks, but talent. A lot, again, like American Idol.

Break a leg and TRUST YOURSELF. Be confident and do the best you can do! That'll be so helpful when you get in there!
