Jekyll and Hyde Auds - 2008/01/20 20:32 There are upcoming auditions for Jekyll and Hyde at anearby theatre company...I've never performed with them before, so I really want to blow them out of the water!

I know all the songs, and most of the original choreography (Yay for the DVD!)...but the audition song!

I am openmindedly going for Lucy Harris...with that being said, any suggestions for audition songs?

I know you can't sing from the show (Darn, because not to brag, but "Someone Like You" is my song!), so I was thinking possibly "Listen" from Dreamgirls, "I Turn to You" or "Hurt" by Christina Aguilera or "Have You Ever Been In Love" by Celine Dion.

Seeing as 3/4 of those are pop songs, I was wondering if all you great theatre folks could help me?

Any other advice would be greatly welcomed!

Thanks!

Re:Jekyll and Hyde Auds - 2008/01/21 00:09 Before the auditions were set for my J&H production the director was wanting us to sing pop/rock songs, however she chose to have us sing "Someone Like You" instead. So I don't think that you are way off base by thinking about using a pop song. If you can contact the director I would ask them if a pop song is o.k.

Of the songs that you listed I would go with "Have You Ever Been in Love" (the lyrics would work so well, and they would give you an opportunity to show your acting skills, which is so important in a show like this) or "I Turn to You" (great sound for Lucy). I would sing them straight, though. Don't bother with all of the runs. For one thing it's not typical of MT and you'll sound like you're trying too hard to copy Celine or Christina.

If you can't sing a pop song I would maybe go with "I Don't Know How to Love Him," from Jesus Christ Superstar. This is for a few reasons, one is that vocally I think that it works for Lucy, the character type fits and the lyrics are a good fit as well. I know this song tends to be over done, but the only other song I had considered (when I was looking at what I knew) was "Unexpected Song," from Song & Dance, which fits when you only look at the lyrics, but the range and style are better suited to Emma. I was auditioning for both Lucy and Emma and probably would have used "Unexpected Song" for my audition.

This is a great show to be a part of, so I really hope that you'll be in it no matter which part you get. Break a leg!

Re:Jekyll and Hyde Auds - 2008/01/21 06:28 May I suggest looking at songs from the musical The Life by Cy Coleman. Very suitable, especially "My body" and "I'm leaving you".

Re:Jekyll and Hyde Auds - 2008/01/21 16:22 You could also look at other Wilderhorn shows. Scarlet Pimpernell has some great songs (Linda E even sang) like "When I Look at You" and "I'll Forget Him" which scream Lucy.

Break a leg!

Re:Jekyll and Hyde Auds - 2008/01/22 00:21 I also have an audition for Jekyll and Hyde, though probably not til April or May. It is with a professional theater, and I am just shooting for chorus.

I already had some sugestions from GIJane on MdN, and I looked into "The Life" but didn't really like those songs. If I can't find anything else between now and then I think I'll do the end of "Painting my Portrait" (or maybe another song) from Jane Eyre. Or possible something from the Secret Garden (Hold On) What do you think? although I think I should look for something that's not strictly a ballad (all I ever seem to find are ballads!!)

So- any ideas for getting into chorus, a moderate to uptempo song that is similar in style to J&H, for mezzo range, I guess? I'm 28, and have a wide range, and wide spectrum of experience in roles (range and type).

Re:Jekyll and Hyde Auds - 2008/01/24 20:53 You know what I think is the best audition song for Lucy? "One Day I'll Fly Away" from Moulin Rouge. Satine and Lucy are so similar & that's Satine's song...I really think it works well for Lucy.

Re:Jekyll and Hyde Auds - 2008/01/24 21:41 Isn't that a ballad though?

What about "If I Were A Bell" from Guys and Dolls? or "If My Friends Could See Me Now" from Sweet Charity or "Sparkling Diamonds" from Moulin Rouge?

Re:Jekyll and Hyde Auds - 2008/01/26 19:42 Now I;m thinking maybe "I Won't Say (I'm in Love" from Hercules, because I just found not only does it have to be uptempo, but also only 16 bars! I hate that! Currently: Dutchess of Detroit
