little shop large ensemble - 2008/01/09 16:05 hi,

my name is ryan, and I'm directing little shop of horrors this spring. my question is, what songs besides skid row and possibly mushnik and sons would work with a large ensemble? it's a high school production, so I don't make cuts, and I really, REALLY need this to work. thanks!

Re:little shop large ensemble - 2008/01/09 17:45 When my high school did it, they had "The Meek Shall Inherit" as a big number too (we had a cast of 70). They also added people to the different scenes; like "Somewhere that's Green" had a ballet going on while Audrey sang. As far as group singing, the only ones that really work are "Meek" "Skid Row" and the finale of course.
Also when I did it in college we had a six girls (as urchins). That helped with adding more people.

Hope that helps.

Re:little shop large ensemble - 2008/01/09 17:55 thanks! yeah, we have a cast of 60. I have 6 urchins, and orin's other roles are being played by different students. skid row, finale, meek, possibly mushnik and son, but I don't know, and I saw another good idea that has people singing and fixing up the shop for closed for renovations. thanks for the input, it's a big help!

Re:little shop large ensemble - 2008/01/21 03:13 i don't know if this is too late, but i just finished a production of LIttle Shop and my director didn't want to cut, so he casted 7 doo-whap girls. Bad idea. He had the original three (crystal, ronnette, and chiffon) but he had 4 girls sing the songs and say the group lines. It created a crounded effect rather than a greek chorus.
being ensomble in shows many times, i'll be the first to say "add more songs for the chorus!" but please don't make the mistake my director made. Other than that, i agree with the suggestions made, meek shall inhereit would be a good one and some cool dancing could be done in "ya never know"

i have to know if i can be astonishing!

Re:little shop large ensemble - 2008/01/21 14:12 A high school in my area did a production of this last year, and during "Skid Row," on the line that goes something like "Uptown you cater to a million hos," something that had to do with "ladies of the night," and they had some people come out dressed up as pimps and (modest) prostitutes, it was very funny. Peace!
Sarah

- Currently in rehearsals for my theatre company's Showcase, performing "There's a Fine, Fine, Line" from Avenue Q, the only appropriate song that I could do!

Re:little shop large ensemble - 2008/02/26 13:57 My question is, why did you pick such a small cast show? There are many shows to choose from with larger casts.

Another way is to double-cast the roles as well as some of the other things already suggested.

Is there anyone else who can direct at your school? You could also do a 2nd smaller cast production at your school and do 2 different shows.

Re:little shop large ensemble - 2008/04/05 20:48 I'm in it now, my director had the whole cast (except audrey, seymour and mushnik) come out and dance and sing with the urchins during the song "little shop of horrors". Everyone was also in Downtown (skid row) and Finale Ultimo (don't feed the plants)

Re:little shop large ensemble - 2008/04/05 22:03 I was just in Little Shop with a cast of about 70. We took Crystal, Ronnette, and Chiffon's harmonies and made them group numbers for "Ya Never Know", "Meek Shall Inherit", "Suddenly Seymour", the finale, and we also had six boys dance during Mushnik and Son. We also had nine urchins instead of three, so we had three "Girl groups" It was a nice effect. "Da-Doo could also be a chorus number, and our music director was able to write harmonies for Grow For Me ~Sarah~

Upcoming: Grease and Guys and Dolls

Past Shows: Godspell, Damn Yankees, Little Shop of

Re:little shop large ensemble - 2008/04/06 09:58 When I was in it with a big ensemble, we sang in "Little Shop of Horrors", "Skid Row", "Meek" and the finale. It worked quite well. We were basically all dressed like towns/homeless people the whole time.

It can be done!
