Which song matters more? - 2006/12/30 20:29 So as everyone knows,I'm auditioning for my school's Beauty and the Beast, and I'm wondering which audition song is more important.Everyone has to sing Be Our Guest, and then choose between 2 other songs for your gender from the show.

Be Our Guest is just a tad high for me,but still in my range, and both Belle and Beauty and the Beast are comfortably in my range. My mom thinks that I sound better singing Belle, but I want to be Mrs. Potts,so I think that I should sing Beauty and the Beast.

So...Which song should I work on the most?

Re:Which song matters more? - 2006/12/31 00:29 work on Beauty and the Beast. since it's the role you are working to get you need to put more effort into that song.

Re:Which song matters more? - 2006/12/31 18:33 I really think you should spend close to the same amount of time preparing each song, because in my opinion, both songs are equally important.

Obviously you want to be at your very best at your audition, and if you spend more time on one of your songs than the other, chances are that song will be better. So, then you have to think if one song is absolutely fabulous and the other is just so-so, will the casting committee think your great song was a fluke or that during your ok song you were just off? Neither scenario is ideal for an audition.

Most of the directors I know talk about how important consistency is, and what better way to prove that you are a consistent performer, than to show them by singing both songs brilliantly. How lucky you are to be able to sing two entire songs at your initial audition! I usually get cut off at about 32 bars or so, and then at callbacks I get to sing a song or two if I'm lucky.

I can understand why you might initially think that "Beauty and the Beast" being Mrs. Potts big number would be more important, but she also sings quite a bit in "Be Our Guest", if I remember correctly she has a semi long solo, and it's the biggest production number in the show, so don't discredit the importance of that song.

Anyway, that's just my two cents, have a great audition!

Re:Which song matters more? - 2006/12/31 19:08 Thanks for the advice!

I've started working on Be Our Guest more to make up for not working on it as much...And it's definitely coming along.

And we aren't singing the whole of either song.We have 16 for BatB and 32 for Be Our Guest.
