Tell me about your voice teacher! - 2007/11/29 17:11 Love em? Hate em? Tell me everything! I'm just curious to see. I'll post what I think of mine after a couple of posts. Jessica

Re:Tell me about your voice teacher! - 2007/11/30 11:39 I love my singing teacher, she is absoltly amazing! although I have to say it was kind of awkward for a while because I've always been kinda self conscious about my singing because I didn't start lessons until about 3 yrs ago, and it was really hard because my teachers son was my best friend when we were kids and i've been in love with him for pretty much forever + he is an absolutly phenominal singer and every once in a while he'd be at the house during one of my lessons and when he was I'd get insanly nervous and my throat would close up and I'd be barely able to sing a note. but anyway he left for university last Sept. (studying voice/opera of course) and since he left my singing has been going so much better that my voice teacher even commented on how much more confidence I have now! but anyway back to the topic, yeah my teacher's fabulous. yeah. so anyone else?

Re:Tell me about your voice teacher! - 2007/11/30 15:01 I love my voice teacher! We've become really good friends, and he's a great backup accompanment! I only go for half an hour a week (all I can afford), but it helps because I get the ear training and the personal training I don't get at school. Also, I can sing whatever I want, so that makes it doubly helpful in case I'm in a show, or have an audition coming up. Currently: Dutchess of Detroit

Re:Tell me about your voice teacher! - 2007/11/30 16:20 I absolutely love my vice teacher! I started with her in October of 2006, so it's been a little over a year. She was reccommended to me by my old voice teacher who thought she had taken me as far as she could. I was really nervous at first, because I, too, am very shy about my singing. But my teacher is really nice, so it wasn't long before I had no problem singing in front of her. The thing I like most is that she is honest. I asked her last March if she thought I should audition for a touring company (I posted about it, I think). I asked three people- my mom, my agent, and my voice teacher. I got a yes, a yes, and a no. My voice teacher just didn't think I was ready- maybe in a few months, she said. She thought I would be mad at her, but I really wasn't- I asked her opinion because I knew she'd give me an honest one. I mean, I am paying her, so she could tell me that I'll become a Broadway star if she wanted. So she was the one I asked about whether I should audition for musical theatre in college. To my relief, she said yes. Auditioning for: Brigadoon, theatre season, American Music Theatre, Into the Woods, Sound of Music, and AMDA.

Re:Tell me about your voice teacher! - 2007/11/30 18:32 I absolutely, positively without a doubt LOVE my voice teacher! She is so charismatic, funny, and nice! I started going to her in July 2007.

Even though its been only 4 months, my voice has improved tremendously. It's not even the same voice anymore! Since I've been going to her, I got nominated as one of the 8 students out of 100 to be in All-County, I got into Select Chorus, and have had my overall confidence imrpoved tremendously. Until this month, I couldn't sing by myself in front of her, I just was really nervous. Now I can though!

She is absolutely HYSTERICAL! She's in her late 20's, but she acts like she's my age. For example, we were singing Big Girls Don't Cry (She let's me choose a new song every once in awhile) and on the part that goes "Clarity, peace, serenity.." she randomly made up a song on teh spot called "Yogalicious" to the tune of fergalicious, I can't listen to that part anymore without laughing! And on a warm-up, she told me to sing it as soft as possible, just to try, and I basically whispered it and she was like "Phone sex operator much?" And oh my God, she's so hysterical I can't even describe it!

Re:Tell me about your voice teacher! - 2007/12/01 00:18 I'm with a new teacher as of 2 months ago.

She is absolutely convinced that she can help me with all my many new problems (hearing loss, this Coloradan lack of oxygen, the fact that I'm going through vocal puberty again), and she's so enthusiastic that a bit of that confidence has even rubbed off on me. I love her because she has been through much of the stuff I'm going through (except the hearing loss, of course), and that is what I think really makes a good teacher.

My teacher before her specialized in vocal health, and did wonders for my poor, wrecked voice.

Before that, my teacher was a better performer than singer (gorgeous classical mezzo!).

And I was with my first teacher for 12 years. I started as a shy, awkward 12 year old without much of a voice, and left her as a shy, awkward 24 year old singing Bach like he was Webber! I've regressed so much...

Re:Tell me about your voice teacher! - 2008/01/04 16:29 I think my vocal teacher has Alzheimer's or something. She tells me to photocopy my sheet music and put it in plastic sleeves in a notebook. Three weeks later, she saw the notebook and said "boy, that's a great idea!"

I told her that I used to be a jingle writer. She asked me if I had every recorded any of my work. I told her that I did, and gave her a CD of sme of my songs. Last week, I did an arrangement of "If I Ruled the World" in my key on my Synth. She said "where did you get this from?" I told her that I arranged it myself and she said "you write songs?"

She doesn't quite know what to do with me. Every week she has some other thing that she wants me to do. Last week it was onsets and sostunudo (sp?). Next week it will something totally different.

Boy, I sure hope she isn't a member of this site

Re:Tell me about your voice teacher! - 2008/01/04 16:59 I've been with my voice teacher for 2 years and I owe him all my current success in singing. Recently I was accepted by taped audition to be part of the American Choral Directors Associations Eastern Division Honors Choir, its an incredible Honor and I happen to be the only student from the entire state of RI to be chosen for this choir. With out my voice teacher I would have never achieved this and I take no credit for this honor because it all belongs to my Voice Teacher J Chris

Re:Tell me about your voice teacher! - 2008/01/04 21:45 My first singing teacher, Derrick was awesome! We were so close and he always picked the right song for me and I felt reallt comfortable around him. He listened to me very well and he always supported me. However I was doing an end-of-the-year concert for my singing/dance center and I just got my palette expander (URGHH!! EVIL PIECE OF METAL) and I was having a tough time singing and I couldn't do "my dramamatic ending" to the song I was singing (On My Own from Les Mis) and Derrick just disappeared. Out of nowhere. So Julie (another vocal teacher) and I had to work on my song and make the best of it and it kind of ended up being sucky. Don't get me wrong I was happy with my performance but I kind of expected more compared to other songs I've done in the past.

So fall comes 'round and I sign up for singing lesson only to learn Derrick isn't going to be there and instead I have a new vocal teacher. Jason.

Well to be positive, Jason is a pretty nice guy and very helpful. He means well and he knows Aaron Lazar personally big points in my book but he has almost NO personality (compared to Derrick) and the songs he chooses for me aren't even in my key most of the time. I try to make the best of it but I don't know....I still miss Derrick....

and that is my campfire story about singing teachers.

Good night everyone.

Re:Tell me about your voice teacher! - 2008/01/04 22:55 i love my voice teacher! i've been with her for almost 2 years, and my voice has really gotten better. it's not amazing yet, but it will be in a matter of years lol.

She's very nice, but when she hears a flaw, she doesnt let it pass over her head. She somehow finds all the latest singing technique and teaches it to us, like different excersizes or warm ups. And she isn't the most popular voice coach in the city, so I get to have lessons once a week. The two most popular teachers have too many students, and make lessons every few months unless something BIG is coming up.

But her "studio" is getting more and more noticed, so that means more chances for getting cast in a show haha but it's true. About half the kids getting leads in school plays are from her! but mostly because they are good, dont take that wrong lol.

Re:Tell me about your voice teacher! - 2008/02/02 15:54 I absolutely love my voice teacher! I've had her for 2 weeks and already she'd my favorite! Her high energy is so contagious. She really wants her students to succeed, but she doesn't candy coat things. A while ago she had to have surgery and the surgeons screwed up her vocal cords, basically the same thing as what happened to Julie Andrews. She is a total crazy and I love her. <3

Re:Tell me about your voice teacher! - 2008/02/02 17:52 I really like my voice teacher. She looks exactly like the red-headed witch in Hocus Pocus... Anyway, she's funny and a very strong singer. She has a lot of criticism, but I'm improving!

Anyway, BethMarch... Can I just take a second to laugh at our usernames? Good choice!
