Just a reminder - you need to pay for the rights to a show before you perform it. Just photocopying a script you found online would be extremely illegal. People think they can get away with it, but there was a children's academy in our area who got caught a few years ago, and they had to pay a lot of money in back-loyalties as well as a fine. _____________

Re:choosing a musical - 2007/06/19 12:24 semi-related to kris' post-- be careful if you are writing your own musical/show and performing it or "borrowing" songs from shows to do a revue. there are a couple of groups around here who write their own shows and base them on fairy tales and board games and the like. for the most part, every thing is original BUT they might "borrow" a title. for example: they wrote a kids' show based on the game Candy Land and called it Candy Land. word got out and they were forced to cancel the show b/c of copyright infringement. there are also groups who do revues and have talked about "getting away" w/o getting permission and some have found out the hard way that you can't.

some people don't think about these things. but if you are thinking about "it" and flying under the radar, definitely think twice.

Re:choosing a musical - 2007/06/19 14:13 The only musicals that are considered public domain are Gilbert and Sullivan and other shows from that era. Most of these would be considered operetta..

But yes, acquire the rights for whatever show you decide to do. It really bothers me when I KNOW someone/company hasn't done this... You can get busted for doing an extra song if you haven't paid for the rights to do it, let alone an entire show. Kathleen Sera

Re:choosing a musical - 2007/06/24 18:54 of course. our company has only done straight plays in the past, but they are big on making sure that everything is legal. in good conscience, we won't do an extra performance of a show we have the rights to unless we have the rights to do an extra show, we are really good about getting the rights and buying scripts from publishers. Re:choosing a musical - 2007/07/03 23:52 Just out of curiosity, I am my schools drama club president and I would very much like to do a broadway concert next year. If I and my school have tons of books of showtunes with piano accompanent are they all free game for a drama club school concert? Or are there any rights involved?

I think with regards to that, a mention of who the composers are in the program is sufficient. If you use pre-recorded karaoke tracks, I think they like it if you request written consent from whoever did the music..

Re:choosing a musical - 2007/11/27 20:29 Godspell is a great one that my church did a couple years ago. Honk! is also a cool one to do, but I'm not sure how the scene changes would go. Our stage some how pulled off the practically non-existing set (therefor no set changes) but for a normal stage, that might not work out quite as well. Honk has very little choreography, though, and it has a huge cast! ~Lizzy~
