A Little Night of Music - 2006/12/28 03:57 Ok so I know NOTHING about this show, I'm looking to play fredrika, but I don't know very much about her character except she's up to no good and she has a little ballet.

What kind of audition piece should I be doing? Typical sondheim or what?

Thanks- Bekki

Re:A Little Night of Music - 2006/12/29 18:14 My absolute Fave SS show!

I have directed it 4 times and actually it was selected for our new season 2008!

Fredrika Armfeldt is a great role for a young person!
I would do anything Sondheim for sure. But as a director I wouldn't scoff at Jason Robert Brown tunes either, although they may be a bit to grown up content wise for Fredrika.
Even though she is young in age, she is old in nature - so if you can somehow show that in an audition it would be helpful.
My biggest suggestion would be to pick something that is as age appropriate as you can without being juvenile. (don't do Annie)
If you still can't think of anything I can probably come up with one or two songs from past auditions that I have heard.

Do you play the piano? sometimes a director knowing that will help you since she is practicing piano when we first meet her.

She should appear as angelic as possible. she does have very good intentions.

Re:A Little Night of Music - 2006/12/29 18:20 Oh yes and you probably know this but I will say it anyway.
It is
A Little Night Music
and is known for being the "Send In The Clowns" musical.

Every song is a waltz
It is considered to be one of SS’s best works by scholars. (but overlooked by community theaters and theaters in general) as it isn't as "splashy" as some of his other works.

Re:A Little Night of Music - 2006/12/29 22:29 Frederika is not a very deep character. Her lines consist of asking innocent questions to her grandmother about why the moon smiles, talking about her mother and how great it is that she's an actress, and speaking with Anne about a man.

On the cd of A Little Night Music, there is a bonus track sung by the movie's Frederika and it's a wonderful song for a young lyric soprano. I don't know if it's too close to the show for you to do, but it's worth looking into.

Think innocent, curious, and dreamy.

Also, I found the script book at my local library and read it; There might be a copy at yours.
Current Show: Coppelia (Swanhilda's friend)
Shows in the Last Year:
The Nutcracker(Spanish Chocolate, The Prissy Doll)
Little Shop of Horrors (Ronnette), Ragtime (Evelyn Nesbit), Urinetown (Little Sally),
Schoolhouse Rock Live (Dori),
