i love theater, but i hate.... - 2006/12/27 21:02 Actors who flaunt themselves and are void of all modesty.

Directors who have favorites are fine, but when one casts someone who is clearly FAR too young/old, or out of their range by a good six notes in a role i get really annoyed.

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2006/12/30 21:17 I know exactly how you feel. I've been rejected because of favortism and the girl who got the part was a LOW alto almost sounded like a man low. And she got a Soprano part! But her mom was dating the director. Kylie

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2006/12/31 00:41 when back-up singers try to over sing the lead and ruin the harmony just b/c they want to be heard! wait until you get your own dang solo!

when a director doesn't give you credit for a suggestion but, instead gives you a look like this and yet... uses your idea! jeez... we just want to better the show!

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2006/12/31 11:12 Greatest example of an actor badly casted for a part he couldn't sing: Zac Efron To go into acting is like asking for admission to an insane asylum. Anyone may apply, but only the certifiably insane are admitted.

i have to echo-- i love theatre but i hate politics. it doesn't make a person right for a role just b/c they are someone's favorite!

there are other things, but i am trying to find a happy place and focus on the reasons why i do theatre!!! LOL!!!

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2007/01/07 17:07 I know how everyone feels about the politics involved with theatre. I hate it when someone who doesn't have to work at all gets a fantastic role, opportunity, etc., whilst the ones who are incredibly dedicated, talented, and persevering get nothing.

It's frustrating, but finding the happy place helps.

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2007/01/07 21:34 People who are favorites and take full advantage of it annoy me the most. Coming from a favorite, anyone who is happy with a role that they were given because the director likes them doesn't actually care about theatre. If I find out that someone gave me a role simply because my parents donate a lot of money to the company or because they just like me I turn it down. If they truly favored a person then they should make them work for roles instead of making them think that they don't have to work for a role. CURRENT ROLE: Liesl/Maria understudy in The Sound of Music
Director for Into the Woods Jr.

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2007/01/08 02:00 Young child actors with humongous egos really grind my gears.

Ah yes, and then there's those young people who do summer community theatre for service hours and make rehearsals difficult because they're always talking and never paying attention. There is nothing more annoying than the director having to stop rehearsal to remind certain people of the task at hand. It is community theatre, after all, but that doesn't mean it's time for fun and games.
sweet Alyssa!

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2007/01/11 23:53 I agree x10 on Stage Mothers.

I really hate how there are twice as many girls in the community childrens theatre and my school theatre. So boys get parts even if they aren't that good. Where a boy will have two people to compete with, a girl will have 10!

Boo!

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2007/01/13 21:42 How about casting someone who can't sing in a musical? Can't sing, has no sense of rhythm, can't even speak-sing to the melody. I heard about this from the understudy, who says the musical director told her he was relieved when she took the stage.

Also, I was in Les Mis a few years ago, and Cosette was double-casted. One was an alto, and the other a mezzo-soprano. And Cosette is supposed to hit a high C at one point.

oh I HATE THAT! When our community theater was doing Dear Edwina, only 2 guys showed up for the auditions and.....30 girls. They called in a guy that had done other shows to be Scott, the biggest guy role, and the other two guys that auditioned were in chorus. I was the other main guy part, which I am SICK of just because I have a mezzo/alto voice even though it was a fun part to play, and several cameos. Haven't worn something flattering onstage in ages...LOL it's fine, but can get a little frustrating!

I quote chouettissimamaureen: find a happy place, find a happy place!
