See What I Wanna See - 2007/10/19 14:53 OMG just found out about this musical last week...truly hilarious. The plot is way too confusing for me to put down, so I'll just let you all figure it out. I think it's a murder one...but Idina Menzel is on the cast album, so I checked it out...the show sounds pretty interesting though. Melchi Gabor, he's such a radical!!!

Re:See What I Wanna See - 2007/10/22 08:53 I totally agree that the plot is too confusing to explain. I have the cast album because I stumbled upon it on iTunes but I have never seen the show. By just listening to the album, it is way too confusing to know what is going on. What with Idina apparently being a crazed, drugged up actress and a priest who pretends to see God in Central Park. I would have loved to see the show to make sense of it.

Re:See What I Wanna See - 2007/10/22 11:02 See What I Wanna See is actually 3 unrelated story lines, one after the other. All three plots are loosely based on the work of a Japanese playwright. If you don't know about the 3 story lines from the beginning I can understand why it would be so hard to follow, especially since MJL's music is so hard to follow in the first place. I haven't listened to the CD in ages so I cannot tell you exactly what the three plots are, but I do know the Idina Menzel character that sings "See What I Wanna See" and the Idina Menzel character who sings the "coffee song" are totally different. Hope that helps Mike

Re:See What I Wanna See - 2007/10/22 12:53 Hmm, well that really puts things into perspective. I had no idea it was three separate story lines. Thanks so much chainfire.

Re:See What I Wanna See - 2007/12/10 01:08 The three stories are
Kesa and Morito
In the Grove (which was inspired by the story Rashomon)
and The Dragon

Kesa and Morito start the first and second act. If you have the CD you will notice that the first (Kesa) is sung by a woman (Idina Menzel ) and the second (Morito) by a man (Marc Kudisch) but they are basically the same song.... see if you can find the difference (which is what is meant to happen)
It then goes into a modern day version of Roshomon which makes up act one - basically a murder mystery.

The second act is called "Gloryday" - where a priest who has lost his faith decides to play a practical joke on the world and says that Christ will rise from the pond in central park "In three weeks, on tuesday at one pm sharp"
Hundreds of people believe him and camp out in central park.
The priest, on the day the event is to happen, finds that he can't go through with it and tells everyone it was a Joke, but no one will believe him.
Then at the appointed time a storm comes up and scares everyone away.
The only person to see Christ rise from the pond... is the priest.
All along the miracle was for him, and him alone, to gain his faith back.
Towards the end of the musical is a beautiful song
"There Will Be A Miracle " that says that people need to believe only on faith and not on tangible things
"You can never rush a miracle, you can't force a thing to be, I am desparate for a miracle but it won't come just for me, we will all share the miracle as everybody should"

It is quite moving!

The major underlying theme is "Playing God"

The reason I know so much about the second act is because I am going to be (hopefully) directing it for our regional competition.
