Re:DQ: 10/25/06 - Offensive? - 2006/10/25 23:04Oddly enough, for a Catholic girl, it takes A LOT to offend me. "My Girlfriend (Who Lives In Canada)" and "You Can Be As Loud As The Hell You Want" from Avenue Q don't bother me (although I won't listen to either if I'm listening to it with my mom. ). I'm pretty open...
I'm actually racking my brain, trying to think of something. I know there are a lot of shows I love that offend a lot of people. Ugh, I just can't think of any! Maybe songs that offended me because they were that bad, but none because of moral standards or the like.
I'll certainly edit if I think of any.Shelby Jr. Moderator

Re:DQ: 10/25/06 - Offensive? - 2006/10/29 20:44like ASHS, it actually takes a lot to "offend" me. i do refuse to listen to the uncle ernie track on tommy, though. i don't know if it offends me as much as it creeps me out. it's very !! i do have a particular sensitivity when there is dialogue or music or even just every day talk about people with mental disabilities. oddly enough, i can deal with it is avenue q...They call me Jessica (like: They call me lady luck... lol)
Favorite roles:
Eva Peron, Evita; Jack's Mother, Into the Woods; Sonia, Godspell; Anything Goes, Reno Sweeney; Audrey, Little Shop of Horrors; Catherine, Pippin

Re:DQ: 10/25/06 - Offensive? - 2006/10/30 21:51I can't think of any songs that really offend me, but if some says that's so jewish, that's so retard, gay, or something like that, I'm bound to get into a shouting match. To go into acting is like asking for admission to an insane asylum. Anyone may apply, but only the certifiably insane are admitted.

Re:DQ: 10/25/06 - Offensive? - 2006/11/07 16:54I'm not a big fan of swearing- I don't myself- so I'm not very happy to sing songs that have such words in them. But I don't want to cause a fuss, so I do anyway. I'm in Les Mis at the moment and the Lovely Ladies song is quite nasty... but I like how the music sounds for that song, so that lessens the offensive-ness.Auditioning for: school drama club cabaret show

me neither, not even when it's in the script. I ask to change the word if it's a solo part. In the ensemble, I just don't sing for that little part. Gotta keep your standards, in my opinion.-Ali

Re:DQ: 10/25/06 - Offensive? - 2007/08/01 15:21I'm a Christian, but for a Chrisitian, I'm pretty hard to offened compared to some people. Swearing doesn't bother me much, but it does in excess (Avenue Q and Spring Awakening I avoid.) Nuditiy in movies and public I can't stand.
Also, racism, stereotyping, and making fun of people (gays, handicapped, etc.) bothers me, and I've been known to get into arguements with people who don't see why this is wrong.
I can't think of anything else right now, but I might later.Psalm 42:8

I agree fully with that statement. But as for songs or shows offending me, it's really difficult for me to think of one, if any, that does.Hi! I'm Amanda Dance is my first love.. but Musical Theatre is a close second.

Re:DQ: 10/25/06 - Offensive? - 2007/08/01 19:11So far I have not found a musical that offends me (this coming from a thirteen-year-old Christian) but if someone calls something "gay" or anything else...you don't want to be around me.Melchi Gabor, he's such a radical!!!

Re:DQ: 10/25/06 - Offensive? - 2007/08/01 21:23i definatly don't have any shows that "offend'' me. i personally feel that if a show (or anything for that matter) is ''offensive'' to you, than just don't go see it or support it!! i think in today's society people are way too worried about being politically correct and making sure not to offend anybody. and it kinda scares me that people are getting that way about art!!! Music and theatre are, in my opinion, the best ways to express yourself, and I sincearly hope people don't start putting restrictions on that kind of stuff in hopes to not offend anybody. Ok, that's all i've got to say about htis matter!!!

Re:DQ: 10/25/06 - Offensive? - 2007/08/03 15:34First - On my DIRECTOR SOAPBOX: As an actor if you audition for a show and there is cursing in it, DO NOT ask for it to be taken out. First, it is against the law, second, you knew it had swearing in it when you auditioned - if you didn't, then you didn't research well enough. I will fire an actor before I change one word of the script.
OK off the director soap box.
Very little offends me. Even Springtime For Hitler doesn't offend me, (Being Jewish) I find it funny because it is SUPPOSE to be offensive and yet saterical at the same time, so it works for the show but doesn't offend.
People come in all shapes, sizes, background etc. Being an actor it is your job to BE that person, not yourself AS that person. YOU may not curse, but that character does.
I have heard every excuse "But my MOTHER will see the show and hear ME cursing" No she won't. She will see you playing a character that curses. If you mama can't stand to see you curse, then don't do the show or, don't have mama see it.
Had an actor playing John Wilkes Booth in "Assassins" who refused to sing and say the "N" word in the show because he absolutely would not say the word. It took me a good two weeks to convince him that John Wilkes Booth would SAY that word and not think about it twice it was common place for him. Of course, it took nearly replacing him with another actor to help him see the light.
I learned this the hard way actually. I was in HAIR and sat on the edge of the stage staring right at my mother (She was in the seat I always looked towards) and sang the song "Sodomy" (Which doesn't offend me either but is probably the nastiest song written for the stage) At first, it freaked me OUT... but after the first few bars, somewhere in my brain it clicked that "I" wasn't singing the song, the character was singing it. Ever since then, it doesn't bother me.

On the same note, I avoid playing characters who curse because I'm a Christian. I thought a lot about this and struggled with it, because that meant I would have to miss out on parts I would kill to play (Fantine especially). But then I really looked at that verse...I forget the reference about "Whatever is pure, whatever is...etc.".
But that's just me. Psalm 42:8
