I sang "Barbara Song" for Man of La Mancha twice and got the Housekeeper, then Aldonza. I don't remember what I used the first time I got cast in the show as Fermina, but to be fair, it was over 10 yeas ago at summer camp. I also used "Barbara Song" for a number of chorus roles and for Domina in Forum, but got cast as Vibrata because I already owned the costume.
I sang "Moonfall" for Glinda and got Glinda in The Wiz.
I sang "If I was a Bell" and got Mary Kenny in Patent Leather Shoes. I was subsequently dropped from the show because I kept sleeping through rehearsals. I later found out that my kidneys were failing. I felt so bad about it.
I sang "The Saga of Jenny" and got Fraulein Kost.
I sang the Mark Hayes arrangement of "Wade in the Water" and got Shirl in Everyday is Christmas, and the MD thanked me for introducing him to the song.
I wnas never too picky about which part I got where because I'm a big-voiced character soprano who looks kind of funny. There are few principals that fit me really well, and I've accepted that. It's changing now that I'm getting older, though. So, yeah, the only two that I had specific ideas about were Aldonza (just the third time i auditioned for Mand of la Mancha) and Glinda.
I tried to be brief. Ha!Briana

Mark Hayes is a tremendous arranger and composer! Do you have his vocal solo collection books? There several: spirituals, hymns, church songs, etc. The piano accompaniments are just wonderful.
Okay, that was an off-topic response, but here is the on-topic response:
I sang "Shanandoah" and got Grandma Tzeitel in "Fiddler."
I sang "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" and was the cook in "Annie."
I sang "In the Bleak MIdwinter" and was Widow Corney in "Oliver."
I sang "Climb Every Mountain" and was Maria and the housekeeper in "Man of La Mancha."

Re:i Sang___for__ and got ____ - 2007/09/23 17:28I don't own anything Mark Hayes, cardrey. All I have is an (illegal) photocopy I got from my old voice teacher 10 years ago!
It's interesting that two people can get cast in the same role (the MolM Housekeeper in this case) when they had used two highly contrasting songs. I hope more people will fill this out, so we can see just how different things are from theater to theater.Briana

Re:i Sang___for__ and got ____ - 2007/12/30 14:36- Well my first musical audition 3 years ago, since it was a school audition and every guy has to sing the same song.
I sang "Seventy Six Trombones" and I got Jacey Squires.
- I sang "I Have Dreamed" for my audition for "The king and I" and got Lun Tha's Understudy and Ensemble/featured dancer.
- I sang "Bring Him Home" for my audition for a production of Beauty and The Beast at Beck Center (a company that hires equity actors and only takes the best) and I got a callback. Although I wasn't cast, I was 15 and I was called back by THE Beck Center. I think thats just as big of deal.
Theirs tons more but thats all I'm going to share for now.Name: Bruce Current Production: None. Upcoming Auditions:
The Butler Did It Singing (Chandler)

I'll only include professional and community productions:
1. For Into the Woods, I sang "You'll Never Walk Alone" and I got squat. I was sad. But, to be fair, the show had no chorus.
2. For Brigadoon, I sang "I Have Confidence" for chorus and got chorus. I had already played Fiona in high school and simply wanted to be in a show, period!
3. For Beauty and the Beast, I sang "Astonishing" for Belle but got Madame de la Grande Bouche. Talk about night and day!
4. For Man of La Mancha, I sang "Show Me" for Aldonza but got Antonia.
Basically, I seem to have a talent for picking songs that land me the second-banana roles. But I still stand by my song choices.-- Kari

For Guys and Dolls I sang "I'll Know" and "Adelaide's Lament" and got Martha. (A random mission doll that happens to have a name. )
For Into the Woods I sang "Moments in the Woods," "Last Midnight," and "On the Steps of the Palace" and got the Baker's Wife. (My favorite part. Ever.)
Other than high school:
For Merrily We Roll Along I sang "I'm not Afraid of Anything" and got Mary Flynn.
For Fame I sang "What More Do I Need?" and "Christmas Lullaby" and got Ensemble.
