we open tonight - 2007/07/27 14:12 last night, we had a preview of Joseph for friends and family. overall, it went pretty well. the audience enjoyed it. but, you will always have the honest friend who is the real critic. there happened to be at least 2... now, i don't mind that at all, but what should i do with the info? here are some of the critiques:

some people broke character, not just once, but multiple times. i can't do "anything" about that-- that's the director's job. i think it would be presumptuous of me to tell people not to break character. and, for all i know, these people were just a little "off"-- i do think this director would have caught stuff like that.

one of the critics had "issues" with the direction and staging. again, something we can't change, and i think that's all a matter of opinion.

the choreography was too "loud". that was something i feared from the beginning, and that was something the director and choreographer cautioned everyone about. i am very used to dancing and walking lightly, but this is a common "fault" i encounter in many casts.

these final critiques concern me: i am one of the narrators. this director did 2. originally he said he was doing a whole good/evil thing. it didn't seem to come out that way, but we do have our own characters and we both play the good or evil at different times. most things we sing are individual, but we do sing together at times. for some of those, i added some harmony, but i was told last night that when we sing together--particularly in unison-- it just doesn't seem right b/c we don't blend. we do have different style voices, but the blending thing has not been a real issue until this week. i have noticed that the closer we got to showtime, the more she was trying to outsing me. i guess it was really obvious last night. additionally, she is singing and i am acting. that is, she is herself, and i am a character. now, we are not ourselves b/c we are costumed like genies and not the typical narrator. the director has given some notes like he really likes what "we" are bringing to the story as narrators but he hasn't really focused on us much. he has never brought up the blending or outsinging issue, either. do i act upon what the "critics" say? is there a way to resolve this before we open or should i just take what the critics say as opinion and leave everything in the hands of the director?? i really wish my parents had come to preview...... i trust their honesty!!!!!
They call me Jessica (like: They call me lady luck... lol)

Eva Peron, Evita; Jack's Mother, Into the Woods; Sonia, Godspell; Anything Goes, Reno Sweeney; Audrey, Little Shop of Horrors; Catherine, Pippin

Re:we open tonight - 2007/07/27 14:38 I hope everything goes welll with the opening!

To address your concerns, I believe that some of these things are aspects of the show that either can't be changed (I think the time constraints might prove problematic), or are matters of personal opinion. In the matter of the other narrator, however, it may be wise to do something about that. If she is indeed trying to outsing you, that is both unfair to you because it's diminishing the apparency the work & talent you've put into this show, and is unfair to her because she's not presenting herself realistically (and may be presenting herself in a way that isn't flattering to either of you).

My advice is to speak to the director. The actress might take it as an affront if you were to speak to her--it's difficult to tell how people will react to honest critique when they're told by a fellow actor--but your director may be able to tell her in such a way that she will be able to take it as constructive criticism, thus allowing her to pull back so that you both are able to show your abilities in full.

Best wishes!
Caitlin
