Voice Teachers - Does gender matter? - 2007/05/25 21:54 Hey everybody, this summer I'm getting voice lessons. They happen to be from my piano teacher whom I've known for 8 years, this is good because number one, he's free, and number two, I know him and how he is. I was just wondering if the gender of your vocal teacher matters, because he is a guy and i'm a girl, so I was just wondering if the gender of your vocal teacher has an impact on the lesson, or would I be better off with a female teacher?

Please help because I'm confused.
Melchi Gabor, he's such a radical!!!

Re:Voice Teachers - Does gender matter? - 2007/05/25 22:12 There are so many factors in what makes a good teacher.... I would say that if a vocal instructor is well trained, has lots of experience, and has an understanding of how to explain things easily then their gender won't make a difference.

Although a female instructor might have more first-hand experience with female-specific stuff, most technique is NOT gender specific.

The one time I think gender would really make a difference would be if the teaching/learning style involves a lot of modeling - it's very difficult for a female to emulate a male voice, and vice versa.

So if he's good, you shouldn't have a problem. Give him a try, and see how it goes! The worst that can happen is that you will have to look for someone else.

Let us know how it works out!

Re:Voice Teachers - Does gender matter? - 2007/05/25 22:26 I agree with Kris...I've had a female vocal teacher that was not that great, and I've had a male vocal teacher who was amazing and really helped improve my voice. So I think as long as he is a good teacher and knows how to improve your voice it won't be a problem.

You won't know until you try...so give him a chance and see if it's a good fit!

Re:Voice Teachers - Does gender matter? - 2007/05/27 04:43 I've been taking vocal lessons for a couple of years. I actually have two vocal coaches, a male and a female. The female is trained in classical and the male is more soul/country/R&B. I have learned many things from each one. What I can't get from the classical instructor I get from my male coach and vice-versa. I love both of them, as they both have different techniques. So, have fun and good luck!!!

Re:Voice Teachers - Does gender matter? - 2007/05/27 15:38 I don't think it should cause many problems. As long as you are learning and improving your voice, it shouldn't matter about gender. •••♥♫♥•••

Re:Voice Teachers - Does gender matter? - 2007/06/19 20:08 I have a male voice teacher, and I'm a girl, and it's working out well for me, no problems. So, I think you'll be fine! Currently: Dutchess of Detroit

Re:Voice Teachers - Does gender matter? - 2007/06/24 19:56 I have a female voice teacher (I'm a guy), and it has worked great. I wanted a male teacher, but there are none in my area that were taking students. But I have made phenomenal progress with my current teacher and am very happy with her. ~Adam
