Re:What kind of Actor are you? - 2007/05/19 19:30 If you are a TRUE method actor (which are rare) you are in character the entire time you are at the theater. The minute you walk through the door you ARE the character.

I just completed a production of Guys and Dolls, and I sort of went through that. Our director would have us do our traditional cast squeeze and cast prayer before the show, and then she would have us close our eyes and shift into the physicality of our character. From the moment we opened our eyes we were SUPPOSED to be completely in character and head straight to the wings for the opening number.

I am proud to say that I was one of the few cast members who took it seriously and spoke, moved and even THOUGHT like my ditzy Hot Box character backstage. Actually, a few other girls and I would even address each other by the names we created for our characters.

Amazingly enough, it really helps - you can definitely tell in many casts which actors walk onstage totally in character with the scenes/numbers as second nature from the people who take a few lines to get into the swing of things.

Re:What kind of Actor are you? - 2007/05/19 21:14 I don't really know what my style is. All my Acting teachers have taught/teach differently. I know that my initial training (back in 8th grade) was Method, though. Maddy, aka minesayrejoice, GreenGirl, GavrocheGrrl, EriksWife (Erik'swife), and jewelkat.

Re:What kind of Actor are you? - 2007/05/20 11:13 I think I'm mostly a natural actor. However, I am kind of representational. The difference is that I do consider what will entertain the audience, especially when I do comedy.

I just did a show where during rehearsals I was kind of funny, but I didn't really try very hard. Then, when I got on stage, everything just naturally flowed out of me, and not to toot my horn but, I was hilarious! I did consider the audience. The whole time I was on stage I was thinking "Oh, they'll think this is SO funny." but the funny things just came naturally to me, without having to think about what I was going to do in rehearsal.

When it comes to dramatic pieces, I'm very split. I recently did a monologue for UIL where I cried during the performance. I was so shocked, I can't cry on cue! I had never cried when rehearsing it or anything, it just kind of came out of me. It was like I was really inside the character, feeling her pain. But only about 30% of me was there. The other 70% was going through the routine (i.e. do this hand motion, look at that person, turn here, shout here.) It was a very strange feeling to have myself and my emotion divided like that.

Re:What kind of Actor are you? - 2007/05/21 20:23 Oh gosh, I kinda know how you feel. During one performance of Bat Boy towards the end when Dr. Park and Meredith go into this story there was a part where I was suppose to just scream "Kill it!" I don't even remember doing that part or anything after that before the next song that happened. But after the show people were telling me that I started screaming like crazy as if I'd seen someone's head get chopped off and curled into a ball on the floor. I was like...Woah...I think I went a wee bit over the 70/30 line...

Re:What kind of Actor are you? - 2007/06/19 20:20 Even though they are pretty much opposites, I'd say I am more of a natural actor with a little bit of method acting (on occasion). Currently: Dutchess of Detroit
Previously: La Sonnambula
Upcoming: Plaza Suite, Best of Friends

Re:What kind of Actor are you? - 2007/06/23 12:19 Well, in the theatre classes I've taken at my high school, we focus mainly on method acting. But, we have a little bit of everything else thrown in there too. We did projects on some of the "methods of acting" and then when we would prepare monologues and such, we would use method.

Sorry if that was confusing. haha.
