Re:Help Me Pick a Show - 2007/04/27 22:34 So I realize this is a little late...but oh well.

Guys and Dolls Jr. is probably too vocally demanding for kids that age. At least you'd have to find a good Sarah.
I think Charlie Brown is a great for kids. There are lots of parts and everyone will have something to do, but also kids can relate to it. Even though it is silly, kids would be playing people their own age. They will probably perform better because of this.
The "Genie" type role in Charlie Brown would be Snoopy. Even though he never speaks, he steals the show hands down everytime.
Another perk is that costumes and sets tend to be easy to do.

Aladdin is also wonderful. Kids typically know it, which helps. If you have a great Genie, that makes it much easier. I've never seen a production of Aladdin, however, so I'm not much help with that one.

Re:Help Me Pick a Show - 2007/04/27 22:39 To respond to the "Jr." discussion, I most definitely agree. I recently performed in "The Music Man, Jr" and it was ANNOYING.
KIDS SHOULD NOT PLAY ADULTS!!!!!
And that's just it.

The roles in Music Man were too hard for many kids to grasp, because they aren't adults yet. It was stupid.

And for those who could perform the roles the show was boring. There is not much acting to do there. The whole show seemed...hurried along. The songs and scenes were short and repetitive. It was as though we were too young and dumb to learn that much. It was annoying.

I really never want to do a Jr. production again.

Right now I'm in that stage of transitioning to adult shows and I am trying to shy away from children's productions, as it is. Jr. shows are just an insult to kids.

Re:Help Me Pick a Show - 2007/04/28 09:15 hah! I directed Annie Jr last spring (somewhat nightmarish), and the other night I drove 2 hours to see my neice play in Annie Jr, and was reminded just how odd these productions are. I saw a quasi Wizard of Oz Jrish production last Spring, and it was terrible. The only decent one was Glinda and they cut out a bunch of her stuff.
I suppose I understand the desire or need for "Jr" productions, because kids can't grasp the themes.....but when I was young and doing film and theatre, I was expected to behave and just learn my part. I don't know why so many people think that kids aren't capable of doing that.

But yeah...I think Aladdin would be an ADORABLE show. triplethreat, I wish I could have seen your idea of the genie harem, that sounds really cool.

Re:Help Me Pick a Show - 2007/06/19 20:22 I'd do YAGMCB, it's cute, pretty easy (great for a first show), and has a smaller cast -less kids to deal with! Currently: Dutchess of Detroit
Previously: La Sonnambula
Upcoming: Plaza Suite, Best of Friends
