voice teachers - 2006/12/27 15:28 Hi, I've been looking for a voice teacher in NYC, but I've been having some trouble. I sort of know what to look for in a teacher once I meet with them, but what I'm having trouble with is that there are so many teachers here that I don't know which ones are good. Who are the most respected teachers in NYC? Can normal people (ie not people who are stars on Broadway) take lessons with them? Really, any advice would be great! Thanks!

Voice teachers range from great to horrid and one that you can get from a referal will help, and not waste your time and money.

Re:voice teachers - 2007/03/01 01:27 Be sure that you really click with the teacher you choose. The greatest teacher in the world isn't going to do you much good if they are insulting or intimidating.

My first voice teacher in college was supposedly the best in the department, but he focused on everything I was doing wrong and never acknowledged how far I had actually come. He was also trying to turn me into something that I was not (i.e., an operatic tenor, even though my natural instrument was clearly suited to Broadway). I was ready to quit singing altogether, but I decided to switch teachers instead. I ended up with a relatively inexperienced teacher who understood my voice, knew what songs worked for me, and she became my greatest cheerleader. The positive reinforcement really made me blossom, and I think she's the reason I was later able to land my first job on Broadway.
