Cosette - 2008/04/23 11:06 Hiii! Okay, so here's my problem. I have a conflict of interests thus far in my performance. I'm playing Cosette in Les Mis and I've felt fairly good in my character analysis until I found something online. Now, i'm not changing completely everything, but I feel like I need some opinions. I know Cosette isn't always a well liked character since she "steals" Marius from Eponine and is often seen as empty-headed but the way i've been portraying her is very different. I'm making her much more extroverted and frustrated than I think she actually is. That's mostly in part of MYself and that's how I am. I realize that I have to put some of me in this, but I don't know if I'm taking it too far. I was reading about something how Cosette always feels the need to mold to the desires of the people around her. If you're interested in reading the full article (if you like Les Mis, I suggest it. It's a great article). My point- how do you guys view Cosette? Am I fighting a losing battle to try and get Cosette to be less of a hated character? Should I concentrate more on her introvertedness than my own self? Help!

Re:Cosette - 2008/04/23 11:51 I've never really understood the Cosette-hating. Personally I think that Eponine is much more pathetic character, since she persists in loving someone who doesn't love her back. But that's a whole separate debate.

There are many ways to analyze a character. My feeling is this - if you can justify how you are playing her - there are REASONS that make sense according to the script - then you are fine.

Theatre is called art for a reason - there are no wrong answers, as long as you know why.

Re:Cosette - 2008/04/23 14:52 I would talk with your director and ask him if your interpretation is fine with him. You don't need to have him tell you how to play the character, you are clearly capable of coming up with that yourself, but asking him if the way that you think Cosette should be played matches with his own. Currently Auditioning for: Narnia

Currently involved with: Nothing...

Re:Cosette - 2008/05/02 15:52 I agree talk to your director. I sympathize with your situation, (I'm in Les mis to), there is so much on each character already, it's so well known, that so much is already expected, go with your gut.

By the way, I've gone through times hwen I hated cosette, it all depends on the portrayl really. I've loved her to.
