Click here to see the profile of this user 		Being 'funny' - 2008/02/24 10:58 For a GCSE drama exam I am in a short play with some friends in a sort of 'clowning' style, complete with OTT actions and voices. The problem is, I don't think we're very funny, well I'm not very funny at least. Any tips on making my character (a fussy, ditzy, girly character with a squeaky voice) funnier? Sophs

Sometimes there may not be enough time, or too little time, between lines or a look, and that makes it not funny. Auditioning for: Brigadoon, theatre season, American Music Theatre, Into the Woods, Sound of Music, and AMDA.

Click here to see the profile of this user 		Re:Being 'funny' - 2008/02/25 11:46 I'm not sure if this makes sense in the context, but a lot of times people who are funny don't realize they're funny (think Audrey's "Somewhere That's Green"). I agree with Flece here; if you try to be funny, then it will look like you're trying to be funny. - Caitlin / Cait -

Click here to see the profile of this user 		Re:Being 'funny' - 2008/03/01 18:32 see if you can get footage on some hilarious actors, and take notes on their comic timing. i don't know if i'm helping or repeating advice, but also don't be funny, funny, funny, and funny, straight in a row, like some sitcoms, that just have joke after joke... sometimes it works, though. For example, a movie/musical with some fantastic (maybe one of the greatest) comedic actors is: The Producers. Mel Brook's stuff also has major comedy.

Also, i agree with Flece. During our Little Shop, people laughed so hard when Audrey or Seymour WERE being truthful, and trying not to be funny.

Click here to see the profile of this user 		Re:Being 'funny' - 2008/04/05 21:40 On my favorite TV show (Studio 60 at the Sunset Strip) Harriet Hayes asks Matt Albe why the "pass the butter" line got a laugh before the dress rehearsal audience but didn't get a laugh before the broadcast audience. Albe's response was "you asked for the laugh". When she asked "why did it get a laugh at dress", he responded "you asked for the butter!"

Pick funny material, figure out WHY it is funny and say it that way. Don't "try to be funny" - "BE funny".
