Spelling Bee- Overdone? - 2008/01/22 22:27 I have a thespian competition at the end of february, and it was my plan to do "The I Love You Song" from Spelling Bee, and my brother planned to do "I'm Not that Smart." And someone rather meanly mentioned something about Spelling Bee being overdone...

So I'll ask an opinion- if you've been to a competition like this, have you seen alot of Spelling Bee? The climate's a little different here in Alabama, but I've personally never heard too much of it. (We hear a lot of Wicked, Rent, and Phantom like everyone else, and a lot of Into the Woods)

I'm hesitant to change songs, because our trio has already been rehearsing the 'I love you Song', and it has potential to be really good. And my brother is not the best singer in the world, but "i'm not that smart" is absolutely perfect for him... So would it be okay if we performed it really well, even if it is a little overdone?

I'm not sure if this was just an inflammatory statement someone said just to be mean, or if it was legitimate. But I've sat in on Solo Musical, Duet Musical and Group Musical several times and never heard any songs from Spelling Bee... Anybody have any thoughts?

Thanks-
Kris

Re:Spelling Bee- Overdone? - 2008/01/22 23:48 From where I'm sitting here in canada, I would say that spelling bee is overdone. However, don't be SOOO caught up in doing something obscure. If you have a song and you know that you can rock it, don't hesitate. Blow them away, give them a new prospective on it, a newfound love for it, make them stand and cheer for you. BUT- if you can't blow that song out of the water, choose a different song. The thing with overdone songs is that they hear them so often, and that means that preformances that are just "okay" seem worse than they are. Overdone songs are also the songs that everyone and their dog has sung. Which means that there are a lot of bad preformances of them. Rock it and the adjudicator will appreciate a fresh approach.

After talking to many adjudicators, I also must tell you that most would rather watch a fantastic preformance of an overdone song than an okay preformance of an obscure song.

Hope it helps!

Re:Spelling Bee- Overdone? - 2008/01/29 14:45 Your in the south.. nothing is overdone here except, phantom, grease, rent chicago, and hairspray.....or anything made into a movie recently.. it is like there is a cultural dam, and unless it is slapped up ona screen few know it.

OK not down on the south as I am a southerner myself.. just frustrated sometimes when you say, lets do "Parade" and they look at you like your have a turnip coming out of your nose and immediatly go into talking about Camalot, The Sound of Music and Fiddler - like they are the only shows ever written..

Currently Directing -
Sweeney Todd (March 2008)

Currently In - Jan 11 - Feb 3 2008
Moonlight And Magnolias - Ben Hecht (non musical)

Re:Spelling Bee- Overdone? - 2008/01/29 19:12 Our solo contests in the northwest, Spelling Bee isn't really common. I suppose it depends where you are, but I think across the board, Spelling Bee is pretty new for solos and auditions. Best of luck, BTW. Name: Devyn

Re:Spelling Bee- Overdone? - 2008/01/29 21:22 I just auditioned 200 people here in Canada, and not one sung anything from Spelling Bee.

I'm not sure about competitions, but it can't be too overdone if I didn't hear it once.

I say go with it if you are confident in it. You should be fine.

Now, if you had said you were picking a song from RENT or Wicked, that would have been a different story...
I'm Samantha. But you can call me Sam.

Favorite Roles:
Rosie - Bye, Bye Birdie
Mrs. Paroo - The Music Man

Current Role: Footloose - Eleanor Dunbar (also Assistant Director)
