Falling in love on stage - 2008/01/11 09:28So, I know that this is a simple thing that most every actor has to do, but I need some advice on how to show BELIEVABLE love on stage. I'm playing Cosette to my good friend's Marius and I want their love to be so realistic. My friend and I have been in a show together where we've had to be in love, but it was a lot different and it was much more cutesy-puppy love. Obviously, Cosette and Marius' love has to be so powerful that everyone risks themselves for them. I know a lot of people dislike Cosette because she ends up with Marius but, I hope they don't this time. Can anyone give me any tips on how to deepen our connection and really make the audience believe we're in love? Thanks!"If life seems jolly rotten, there's something you've forgotten. Re:Falling in love on stage - 2008/01/11 15:51Eye contact is very important, I think. And smiling, too. If you've ever been in love, think of how you felt when you saw that person, when you've touched that person, when you've been away from that person, and try to replicate those feelings in context of the script.
During King and I, it helped me to think of the sweetest, nicest thing my significant other at the time had done for me and I couldn't help but smile and look dreamy.
If you really, really feel what the character is feeling, it will come across on stage.Kathleen Sera Current Shows: Aloha Pinafore - Volga Upcoming Auditions: Crazy For You - Irene Roth

Re:Falling in love on stage - 2008/01/11 19:47I agree with what's been said before. Think about the way you act towards a guy you like. (Someone you actually know, not an actor or somebody...) The little things that you do to catch his eye, the way you watch to see if he's looking at you, the way you suddenly change your demeanor when he's around, the way you blush and start smiling when he talks to you... It's stuff like that that makes it look realistic. This isn't a golf tournament, being loud is more than acceptable!

Re:Falling in love on stage - 2008/01/11 22:15I haven't done many roles were i had to be "in love", but eye contact is very important because it helps to get across emotions to the other person. I would definitely think about someone you like, i know when ever i do i smile and have a dreamy air about me. Hope it helps! -Laura

Re:Falling in love on stage - 2008/01/14 11:08Thank you guys SO much! I just hope I don't over-do it. I also hope that Cosette becomes a more liked character when I do it because I know that even I didn't like how Cosette ended up with Marius. I'm worried, also, about the first time we meet. It honestly has to be LOVE at first sight. That's the whole point, how fast it escalated. Thank you ALL so much for the help. I hope my friend can pull this off with me!"If life seems jolly rotten, there's something you've forgotten. And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing"
