Company - Susan - 2007/12/29 00:45
I was recently cast as Susan in a local production of Company. The rest of the cast is amazing and I'm actually pretty surprised I was included in the cast with my youth and comparative inexperience. With this character not having a song and a short scene, I'm worried she'll get lost in the crowd and overpowered by all these amazing performers. Has anyone played the role who could give me some pointers on how to bring this character to life?
My other concern lies with her Southern accent amidst a group speaking 'without' a particular dialect. I'm fearful that it will sound corny. I myself feel as though it was thrust upon the character as it would otherwise be difficult for the audience to delineate her from the other wives. Any tips on how to not sound like an actor trying to put on an accent? Most of all, I'm afraid that the only thing that will be remembered from my performance is that I was the one who had a bad southern accent. Any suggestions on having miss Susan stand out from the crowd in a different, more positive way would be appreciated!
Also, if there is any video out there of one or both of her short scenes, I'd love to know where. I'm a glutton for seeing a part performed by various actors and such, I feel I learn best what to do and not to do in this way. (I promise that I am not just a big copy-cat!)
