Typecast - 2006/12/16 04:31 When our school had auditions for "Grease" i (naturally) tried out. I made the part of Eugene. Wait, let me explain...

Around my school I'm viewed as a bit of a nerd or geek. Everybody said my part was typecast! My parents said my part was typecast! I'm a GIRL playing a GUY! What do you think of this?

Re:Typecast - 2006/12/16 04:55 well, being a boy isn't all that bad. the way i see it, you were in the show and by some of your stories it sounds as if you had a great time doing it. in schools i noticed a type of politics that goes on and favoritism. when i was in hs we did Beauty & The Beast... the Belle and Beast already knew they were going to play the roles b/c they were informed before summer break. it's not fair, but it happens.

type casting however, can be you're worst enemy or your best friend. and that's the way i see. in most of my auditions i have been to the people ask me to repeat a part of my monologue... but ditsy. that's what i get for being a tall blonde.

just totally embrace the role and steal the show.

Re:Typecast - 2006/12/16 05:06 Don't worry about it in highschool shows. Especially in musical theatre in highschool, a lot of the time there aren't enough boys in the class to fill all the male roles and far more females than there are female roles.
I am one of the most feminine people I know, and I have been cast as a rough-and-tumble outlaw cowboy twice. In two different shows and with two different directors.

As Holly said, embrace the role and steal the show. Nerdy characters especially can be an absolute riot.

Re:Typecast - 2006/12/18 19:58 katoru's right, usually more girls go out for high school musicals than guys so that's probably why you got cast as a guy. i would take it as a compliment that they think you have the acting range to play a guy. i'm typecast a lot too, usually as an evil person, but the roles that you get when you're typecast tend to be more fun anyway -Georgia

Re:Typecast - 2006/12/19 05:10 Thanks, I've been told I'm a very good guy...I totally embraced my inner geek! Oh, BTW after the show one of my other cast members came up with her little sister and said: "That's the girl with the pants," (my pants were pulled WAAAY up cuz' I was the nerd) and the little girl looks at me and goes: "You're a GIRL?" so yeah, I do the guy thing very well.
