Re:music man audition - 2006/12/06 21:12i lied. well, my friend did. i'm just a chorus member without a name. sucks for me. two of my friends are both picka little talk a little ladies (who are pretty popular) which makes me feel worse that my school is STILL just choosing popular kids. but marian isnt that girl i was talking about anymore...it's someone a year younger!! now this musical doesnt sound so fun anymore. but i don't want to quit, for some reason.*´¨) ¸.•´¸.•*´¨) ¸.•*¨) (¸.•´ (¸.•´ Annie

Re:music man audition - 2006/12/06 23:22if you don't think you are going to have a good time, you probably shouldn't do the show. it will only create negative energy which is not good for anyone-- especially you.
BUT please don't think that being "just in the chorus" is a bad thing. sometimes that is where you get noticed. you just have to really be into it. create a character for yourself. you don't need a name or a solo to be a character.
unfortunately school, community, and even professional theatre are going to have their "favorites"-- those who are cast and maybe don't necessarily deserve it. and there are going to be the ones with talent who will wonder why they didn't get the parts. again, it's wasted energy to worry about it. move on to the next thing. everything happens for a reason. maybe we don't always know the reason right away... the cliche is hindsight is 20/20....but if you worry or muse over not getting a part, you won't grow as a performer. your decision right now is do you do music man or do you drop it. remember, since it is a school show, dropping it might "hurt" you a little in the long run, but it will hurt you more if you are a poor sport and stick w/ the show.
i know you are upset about not getting what you thought you should have. be comforted in knowing that it happens to all of us. my advice to you would be look at this as an opportunity to develop your talents in a group-- it's really important to be able to blend in a chorus. have fun w/ the show-- music man is one of the better shows for choruses. make a character-- develop your acting skills. even when you are a lead, there are going to be times when it's not spelled out for you what you need to do. being a nameless ensemble member will give you the chance to "play". and maybe you will be able to do another community show simultaneously.
please don't be so down. in the end, it's just a school show. your time will come. They call me Jessica (like: They call me lady luck... lol)
Favorite roles:
Eva Peron, Evita; Jack's Mother, Into the Woods; Sonia, Godspell; Anything Goes, Reno Sweeney; Audrey, Little Shop of Horrors; Catherine, Pippin

Re:music man audition - 2006/12/07 00:38I agree with everything that's been said. I've been to shows where the leads were horrible, but there were select chorus members or small characters that I couldn't get enough of. Really get into charaacter, and be the best that you can, and just have fun. If you go into practices with an attitude of "I don't want to be here." or "My part should be bigger!" you'll never have fun, and you probably won't do well either. If you go in with a positive attitude, you'll have much more fun. I wouldn't drop out if I were you. It's up to you, but I'd rather have a small part then no part. CURRENT ROLE: Liesl/Maria understudy in The Sound of Music Director for Into the Woods Jr.

Re:music man audition - 2006/12/07 04:02thanks you guys. i'm sorry, i sound like such a bad sport. i think i'll stick with the show...for now. i just didn't have a very great time in last year's play as the chorus, until it was almost over when i finally got buddies. i'll try to have fun, but it will be hard.*´¨) ¸.•´¸.•*´¨) ¸.•*¨) (¸.•´ (¸.•´ Annie

Re:music man audition - 2006/12/07 14:22I know EXACTLY how you feel. Like, seriously. In October, I was in a production of Music Man at a local childrens theatre. I had never auditioned there before, but I was confident that I would at least get a Pick-A-Little Lady... WRONG. I was a townswoman. The only "townswoman" over thirteen. (Yeah- I looked STUPID at curtain call) I almost quit, too- especially after the first rehearsal when I heard the selected "Pick a little ladies" (Who were AWFUL) I was also advanced farther vocally than most of the cast, so I had to "dumb my voice down" so I wouldn't either overpower them or stick out too badly. I felt so incredibly old the entire production. (Even though there were at least ten other cast members my age or older)
Theatres pick their favorites. That is life. But you can hope that if you keep going back often enough, they will start to recognise you. If you have a good attitude, try hard, and really shine no matter what part you are given, they'll start to like you. My director at school always says "There are no small roles, only small actors."
So, basically, make the best of it. And if you create a character that at least amuses you, you should feel great! (For instance, I decided I was an old maid, excluded from the pick-a-littles because I was Jewish, and I was an ex-mistress of the Constable.)
