Role Refusals - 2006/11/22 05:42I think this is the right place for this, seeing as it is sometimes part of the audition process, but if I'm incorrect, my apologies Kris
What are everyone's thoughts on role refusal?
At my last audition I didn't receive the part I really wanted (they decided to cast the leads a bit older, which led to the supporting leads getting cast older & you get the picture). Anyways they offered me a part in the show, it's significantly smaller, but IMO that doesn't make it any less important, however I'm not entirely sure if I want to do the show or not. (See my blog for more info if you're interested )
I guess I'm just not sure of the etiquette of role refusal (if there even is), having never refused a role before. So any thoughts or personal insights into this subject would be really appreciated.----------Emily----------

Re:Role Refusals - 2006/11/23 00:00this came up on the forum earlier.... i can't remember where, though....
i have been in the same situation as you on several occasions. on your audition form, was there a spot that said, "what role do you want?" followed by, "if you don't get that role, will you consider others?" followed by, "will you do ensemble/is there any role you will refuse?" if so, how did you answer them? if you were up front from the beginning and made your intentions known, i don't think it's bad etiquette. i have heard directors complain when they have asked those questions, people wrote yes, and then when they were called about being in the show, they refused. it makes it difficult to cast a show when people who said they would be part of the cast decide they don't want to do it b/c they wanted different parts-- sometimes people think, "if i say no they won't consider casting me at all". directors have said they'd rather have honesty and they wouldn't hold it against anyone for refusing something.
if you are in a situation where you said no and they are still asking you to be a part of the production in a lesser role, it's your call-- i really hope they wouldn't hold it against you if you said no. this happened to me in several situations, too, but in the end i did not refuse the "lesser" role....
hth....They call me Jessica (like: They call me lady luck... lol)

Re:Role Refusals - 2006/11/23 05:50On the audition form there was only a line asking what role(s) you were auditioning for. However, the casting committee did say that if we did not get cast as the role we auditioned for they hoped we'd consider accepting a different or ensemble role.
It did help, thank you so much!----------Emily----------
