going to the dark side....High School Musical - 2008/03/04 23:33It turns out that High School Musical will basically be my only option for theatre in the summer. I am going to audition for Sharpay. My first choice for an audition song was "My Strongest Suit" from Aida but I can't seem to find the sheet music. Now, I think I am going to sing "Always true to you in my fashion" from Kiss Me Kate. I think it's a good choice because Lois is the kind of actress-y personality as Sharpay. Even though it's Cole Porter and High School Musical is obviously pop I think it would be okay becuse it is very showy and Sharpay is a diva. What do you all think?--Ashley-- Current Production: Nothing right now! Upcoming Auditions: "On The Razzle", "The Wizard Of Oz", "Blood Brothers", "Hamlet"(Auditioning for Ophelia!!!!!) Dream Roles: Rizzo "Grease", Fantine "Les Miserables", Ms. Lovett "Sweeney Todd", Gwendolen "The Importance of Being Ernest" , Ophelia "Hamlet", Cherie "Bus Stop", Mama Rose "Gypsy",

Some others I might also suggest are: Amazing Mayzie from Seussical, Cooties from Hairspray (not as likely to be overdone since it wasn't in the movie) or Look at Me, I'm Sandra Dee from Grease. Mainly think Attitude, ego and jealousy of the other woman in your themes.
I played Martha Cox in our HS Musical & it was a fun show. It's worth being in HSM once at least. I think I would only do HS Musical AGAIN if I got Sharpay. It's the funnest part!
Break a leg!Favorite Shows: Once on this Island, Wicked, Hairspray, Legally Blonde Dream Roles: Ado Annie/Oklahoma, Galinda/Wicked, Elle Woods/Legally Blonde Favorite Role: Ti Moune in Once On this Island Jr In Production: Best of Broadway Revue, Elle Woods/Legally Blonde

Re:going to the dark side....High School Musical - 2008/03/22 11:18Haha I was in a production of HSM last summer, its actually a really fun show to do, despite it being so lame. The re-written stage music is pretty dang good and the scenes that tie the songs together really give the actor a lot of freedom. Our production ended up selling out the last 6 performances. I played Ryan.
Fun times.Currently: Elton Johns AIDA (Chorus, Dancer)
Past Shows: 101 Dalmatians (Roger) Grease! (Teen Angel, Chorus) High School Musical (Ryan)

Re:going to the dark side....High School Musical - 2008/03/27 15:02i think Cooties would be a GREAT choice for this audition, because Amber and Sharpay have many similar characteristics, and that song is pop-y like HSM!! Just make sure you show lots of confidence and attitude!! you'll be great!Favorite past roles: Little Sally (Urinetown), Little Red (Into the Woods), Young Vi (Violet), Babe O'Day (Good News), Patsy (Crazy For You), Sarah (Seven Brides For Seven Brothers), Woodstock (Snoopy!!!)
Next Up: Gertrude McFuzz (Seussical), Patti Simcox (Grease)

just kidding! always true to you would be the best, I think, since Cooties will be so overdone and the HSM crowd that will audition probably all love Hairspray- the movie, so that will be what they automatically think to audition with. Sigh, the downside to movie musicals.-Ali
Currently: -Sheila; Boys Next Door (postshow depression mode) -acceptance to acting ensemble -Bye Bye Birdie (audition- didn't get a callback)

Re:going to the dark side....High School Musical - 2008/03/28 13:06You know, we all make fun of HSM because it is so sappy, but maybe it will pump some life into Musical Theatre, a genre that many have said is eclipsing. Nothing like Disney in your corner to stir things up!

Re:going to the dark side....High School Musical - 2008/03/28 13:19Some of you might like throw tomatos at me in a town square while I'm in the stocks or something but I actually like some of the numbers from HSM and HSM 2. "I Gotta Go My Own Way" from HSM 2 made me tear up when I first heard it. Some of the numbers are fun. I'm in a show that kind of highlights musicals and there are two numbers from HSM 2. "All For One" and "What Time Is It?" and the dances are pretty hardcore. I'm having a lot of fun. They are doing HSM 2 at a theatre and another theatre (the more professional one) is doing HSM 1. It's so awesome but I can't audition because of the things I have going this summer. But yeah. I don't think HSM is as bad as people say it is. I agree that it's bringing something to the musical theatre genre. More and more people are becoming interested in it. For a while, I thought there was going to be a musical theatre revolution of some sort. Ahaha!Currently: Penelope Sycamore in You Can't Take It With You Past: Henrietta (Honk Jr.)

Re:going to the dark side....High School Musical - 2008/03/31 18:10Well, you know you'll sell out all the tickets and the house will be full at this show! Nothing wrong with getting people away from the tv and out to the theatre! AMEN!
I think the show is cute. Currently playing: Lily! (Secret Garden) YAYAYAYAY!

Re:going to the dark side....High School Musical - 2008/03/31 22:37To add to what Meg said, I did this show, and we sold out all our performances, and then added a few. It's fun to perform for sold out (and generally nice and vocal) audiences every single night!I'm Micaela. But you can call me Mickey!
Currently: Taking a much needed BREAK!
Dream Roles- Lucy in YGMCB, Penny in Hairspray (She's hysterical!), Anything in Oklahoma.

I teared up during I Gotta Go My Own Way, too! I also like All For One and What Time is It. I didn't really like HSM 2, but I still love the original. Which brings me to my news...
They're doing it near me this summer as a by-audition camp. I would love to be Gabriella or Sharpay, but I'd deffo take Kelsey or Taylor. So... I'll just ask on this thread... what should I sng for Gabriella? I think I can more pass a a nice-girl than a mean girl, though I can play mean girl pretty well too (I look very innocent, though, LOL).Auditioning for: Brigadoon, theatre season, American Music Theatre, Into the Woods, Sound of Music, and AMDA.

Re:going to the dark side....High School Musical - 2008/04/25 22:55to answer the last comment, i think that Gabriella and Sandy from Grease have veryyyy similar character, i mean they both are shy, sweet, smart, a little goody- goody, and are going for the big man on campus. so i say do something Sandy does, or something she WOULD do. good luck!~Kayla~ Current shows:none :[[[ Upcoming: NONE Recently: Robin Hood, Treasure Island, My Kind of Town

Re:going to the dark side....High School Musical - 2008/04/25 23:31Ahmayzing Mayzie from Suessical would be fantastic!(for the original poster) As for the post before last (Rachel, I believe) ((and this may be completely off, but this is the first song that came to my mind for this)), "The Wizard and I" from Wicked would sound good to me. It shows her at first in the song kind of quiet and shy, then she blossoms by the end (like Gabriella in "Breakin' Free"). I know Wicked is bit (oh, who am I kidding) way overdone, but I actually haven't heard of a lot of people doing this song specifically. Break a leg, both of you! (PS- Don't feel bad for doing HSM, theatre is theatre, after all!)Current Role: Louise Lerman/Eve (Judy's Assistant) in "Ruthless!" by Marvin Laird. Recently: Lala Levy in "The Last Night of Ballyhoo" by Alfred Uhry. blog:: thedramagirl.blogspot.com
