Stae fair audition - 2008/04/16 17:44 My high school is doing State fFair next year and I am already thinking about sept. Auditions. I am an alto 2, with a very broad range. I have been told that my warm mature tone is what makes my voice stand out. I played the sour kangaroo (a huge strain on my voice, but I did it) in seussical this year and the director said I would be a perfect Mama rose if he were doing Gypsy but he isn't. I am definately not the ingenue type. Which role in stsate fair should I go for and which one fits my vocal range. I have been searching, but I don't know if any of the female roles would even fit my voice. Thanks (I am 17)

Re:Stae fair audition - 2008/04/18 19:18 I was in a production of state fair last year, and the only major alto/mezzo role is the mother. The mother has some great songs (When I go out walking with my baby and boys and girls like you and me). Possibly even one of the exotic dancers (jeanne and Vivian). This show is mostly based around the sort of legit traditional singing, so, you will want to show that off. Good Luck!! State Fair is really fun as a show.

Re:Stae fair audition - 2008/04/19 13:30 If you can play a role like the Sour Kangaroo I would seriously look into the role of Emily Arden. She's the musical entertainer of the show. Some directors make the character a dancer, some don't. I would say she's a mezzo belt. Unfortunately the movie versions aren't very much like the stage version and some of the songs are different as well. I recommend getting the 1996 OBC recording to see what you think of the various roles. The booklet that comes with it has a lot of info regarding the characters and the show itself. ~Annie
