Full Monty Audition 3/24; song suggestions? - 2008/03/05 12:22 auditions coming up for The Full Monty. I'm interested in Ethan, Malcom, Jerry, (or even Buddy Keno Walsh, who doesn't sing much i think) anyway, i have only been serious about singign for a year or so and i don't have a lot of songs on tap. I'm a baritone/ Tenor (male mezzo? ha ha). Songs I have done well before include:

If I loved you (Carousel)
What do you do with a BA in English (Avenue Q)
Jailhouse Rock (All-Shook up)
Impossible Dream (Man of La Mancha)

hopefully that gives you an idea of what i might be able to do? all suggestions welcome.
Chris

Re:Full Monty Audition 3/24; song suggestions? - 2008/03/05 15:10 I am a huge fan of the music from The Full Monty. Unfortunately, no one around here is brave enough to put it on so I haven't had the pleasure to see it onstage yet. Are you familiar with the songs? It is definitely a contemporary sound. If I was choosing from your list, it would probably have to be BA in English.

Although the guys should be pretty dynamite singers, their characters are clearly the focus so make sure you bring that across. I wouldn't worry too much about having a "pretty" voice because there are so many guys in the show, they will need to cast with a sense of vocal diversity. All the main guys are pretty downtrodden - I'm trying to think of similar characters in other shows but nothing is coming to me at the moment.

Re:Full Monty Audition 3/24; song suggestions? - 2008/03/05 15:44 You hit the nail on the head"Songs you do well" is the key to any audition, The ones you mentioned are good choices for you vocal range. "Maria" from "West Side Story" might be another you might add to your list. Good Luck! Retired from the business after more than 35 years doing mostly character roles, Concentrating now on musical theatre, teaching and directing. Active in A.E.A. and S.A.G. Love to help young performers get started

Re:Full Monty Audition 3/24; song suggestions? - 2008/03/05 17:16 thanks for the encouragement. I was leaning towards BA in English (although i use that one a lot) or jailhouse rock ('cause it's fun and upbeat). I know this company and have worked with them before, so my chances are good, i think. actually it's the same company where we just closed La Cage aux Folles... I figure any part I land is a big switch after Hanna from Hamburg. maybe i have an internal exhibitionist! Chris

Re:Full Monty Audition 3/24; song suggestions? - 2008/03/10 12:26 I played Estelle about a year and a half ago in the NJ premiere. This is an amazing show with a great variety of characters.

If you want to steer your audition towards Jerry, then I suggest you sticking with your "Jailhouse Rock" idea. Jerry has more of a rock sound than the other characters in the show. I think "Jailhouse Rock" exhibits a little more of a similar sound (and character) to Jerry than "B.A. in English".
