Urinetown song help - 2008/03/01 20:45I'm auditioning for Urinetown. I don't know much about the show, and auditions are next week (just got the word) I have a lot in my rep, I just need to narrow down a style of song. I'm going for any part, but probably chorus. thanks in advance!-Ali

I am currently in the ensemble for a community theatre production of "Urinetown"!! You shuld read the recap on this site, under "SHOWS".
At auditions, people sang short pieces of lots of various songs...our director was just looking for "strong voices". There is lots of great chorus music, whether you play one of the rebels or the staff of UGC. just my feelings, but it is a bit more difficult in the harmonies than most musical theatre, so if you can read music, so much the better! Great dancing and movement as well. It is a FUN show, good luck!!

Re:Urinetown song help - 2008/03/09 12:42Why just shoot for the chorus? There are some really wonderful parts in Urinetown, and some of the Poor have a decent amount of lines, and two have a feature song. I was Little Becky in the production at my school. As for style of song, I would probably go for a ballad. If you're shooting for a chorus role as one of the Poor, doing an uptempo jazzy kind of song would be a good idea, because most of the Poor's music has that feel to it. However, if you're looking at either being one of the UGC executives or Hope, I would pick a classy, ingenue-esque ballad. For Penny or Little Sally, pick something that shows a lot of character and (for sally) good comic timing ability. I hope that helped =)

Re:Urinetown song help - 2008/03/09 15:32thanks for the help. I was shooting for chorus because the director is only letting a few people under 18 in, and unless you blow them away, you're in chorus. Little Sally, etc. are apparently all played by adults acting like kids, a la YAGMCB. Its my first show with the company, so I have to 'pay my dues'.
Anyway, my mom isn't letting me audition even though I'm completely prepared.
she won't let me since I've done 3 shows this year, even though I told her chorus roles don't have to be there a lot....sigh...I can't audition for Sweet Charity or Taming of the Shrew or Rumors OR Romeo and Juliet, either, which is tragic. Next year Kiss Me Kate and The Wiz are being put on, so I'll shoot for those. Drat my non-theatrically-obsessed parents lol-Ali

Re:Urinetown song help - 2008/03/10 00:51Aw, that's too bad. The chorus in Urinetown is both super-fun and demanding. When your parents say "year," are they referring to school year or 2008? If it's just the school year, then you can use these last couple months to work on technique. If it's 2008, then I'm sure you can wear them down with enough eyelash fluttering and oscar-worthy begging.Briana
