Scales - 2006/12/21 17:22 Sorry if this is on the wrong board but I wasn't sure where to put it. Whenever I go to auditions usually they have you sing scales to test your voice and see how high and low you can sing. I noticed that I can sing much higher when I'm singing a song then when I sing scales. Is this just a matter of breath support, or is something else going on? I don't want to miss out on getting a note because I can sing up to a note on a scale even if I can sing it in the song.

Re:Scales - 2006/12/21 18:42 Ooh, I'm curious about this answer because I have a similar problem.

(Just as an add-on question, any advice on how to do those the best? I always am nervous or need one or two scales to get my tone right.)

Re:Scales - 2006/12/21 19:19 It could be because of nerves, or maybe because the scales are serving as a sort of warm-up for you. Do you warm up prior to singing the scales? If not, it might be helpful to do a few personal warm-ups before singing your scales. I know it's difficult to find things you can do that won't be distracting, but I quietly hum scales and buzz my lips while I'm waiting for my turn.

Hope that helps!
sweet Alyssa!

Re:Scales - 2006/12/22 00:09 There are also sounds that are easier to sing than others for some people. I know that I can sing E's easily while I struggle with my A's in my higher register. It's only a matter of practice - and not forcing! -- Marie

Currently:
- Fraülein Kost/Officer/A Lady/German Singer in Cabaret (December)
(That's what happens when you put on a production with only 10 people in the cast)
- Rehearsing for a Sondheim Tribute (October 1st)

Re:Scales - 2006/12/22 11:51 This happens to me too! At the audition when we did individual scales I couldn't hit the higher notes, but when I sing Amazying Mayzie I can hit every note! My bet is that it's just because when singing a song, we usually have am example of what it's supposed to sound like with a voice rather than just a piano or a small "la". The opposite of Rent is Oklahoma!!! Why didn't I think of that?

Re:Scales - 2006/12/30 02:43 I've never been to a professional audition before because I'm only 15 and live in a smaller town but I think singing a exercise thats called "Hello I love you goodbye", "Oh how I love to sing'", or "Put the hood on the car" is much harder then regular scales. Really if your in the key of C its C E G C G E C with the fourth note and octive of the first. So for the first. So you may have done it with out the words too. But if you can work on doing that exercise doing scales in a higher rang is a piece of cake. Plus remember to take deep breaths before you start and try to relax. Kylie
